How (not) to kill a blood dragon!

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:59 am

Hi all,

Was in a dragon fight today after messing about trying to sort out how to hide HUD, activate a 'free' camera and take pictures in SKYRIM.

I just had to try to capture the fight and found myself surprised at how it ended!

First I attacked dragon with bow but as it came in for kill, switched to mace / axe combo;

Bring it on!

As dragon flew off - back to bow and kill (surprise) sabrecat before putting a few arrows into now landed dragon;

Goodbye kitty - hello dragon breath

After a quick potion or two and a switch back to duel wielding I got my first surprise;

Heads up!

So, distasteful as it may seem, while ahead (ouch);

SMASH!

If at first you do not succeed;

Aim for the kill

And too end it all;

SMASH again!

When all is done, cry a little;

SOB! SOB!

Not crying at death of such a wonderful enemy. Rather, I cry at the game telling me that the blood dragon resisted soul trap and that I failed to absorb the soul. :(

Still - it was a good fight.

Now, I know some of you will have killed a dragon or two in such a manner - but this was my first such kill. :clap:

Edit: Just remembered my picture host has been up and down all day - if the links do not work please try again later.

Thank you. I just love my epic glass armour too. :sb:

Thanks. I was so lucky to get the action shots of the 'kill'. The 'wide' shots are pretty much standard though. I was taking the fight shots only as a sample - that is until my character jumped onto the dragons head! :ahhh: Unfortunately the dragons head shots are an animation (because it is a special move I think) and the free cam does not work for those - would have been some great shots if it did - lol.

Great shots man!

Thanks. I'm so glad I took a little time to figure out the camera stuff on the console (PC). :celebration:

Thanks again for the comments all. If using a PC, the console info in my sig may help you with taking in game photos.

Thank you! I'm storing dragon bits to make the armour later - can hardly wait. :)

Sorry - I may have made a mistake in description! Usually dead dragon = capture dragon soul (regardless of 'soul trap'). I did not get the fancy burning anim ending in skeleton of dragon and dragon soul added is what I meant. I do not know if this is a bug - just that the message on screen said that the dragon resisted soul capture / trap and I cannot remember exactly what the wording was. :)

Wow this game looks good, good angles.

Thanks! I hope our little 'disagreement' in another thread today has not soured you against me by the way - it has not soured me against you. ;)

Great Shots! And you're lucky -- in my game my character never actually gets ON the dragon, she appears to sort of balance on the side of its head....

And, since you're going to absorb the soul, I doubt you can use soul trap to get it a second time....

Ah! you hit the nail on 't head so to speak! I DID NOT absorb the dragon soul at all.

The last shot is how the dragon has stayed - skin still on. Usually when I kill a dragon I absorb the soul (flashy animation) and have a dragon dragon skeleton. This time, I finished kill, waited for absorb anim, looted dragon, wait more, walked around dragon several times and still no absorbing took place.

I fear I incorrectly made it seem like I wanted to absorb the soul and soul trap it - thus getting a dragon soul and a filled soul gem. This is not what I want or meant - sorry for any confusion.

Thanks for the compliment too. :smile:

Thank you and I do hope to get some more good shots.

I have to say that, considering I just happened to get lucky with the shots, the responces on this thread so far have been great. Thank you all again. :)

If the dragon is a repeat of one you killed earlier, it will not have a soul to absorb. This generally only happens with the ones that roost on exterior word walls, which from the looks of your pictures appears to be the case.

As for the Soul Trap enchantment, it does not work on dragons or Dwemer robots.

I may well have killed the dragon previously! And thanks for the info on soul trap. :smile:

It does seem odd that the same dragon could potentially spawn and be a valid kill (re-kill) then not give up the soul. If a 'second' dragon spawns that is a kind of copy of the first, it should have its own soul!

Point here is - if I killed it it should not respawn! [edit] I have no issue with fighting different dragons at same locations but they should be DIFFERENT! [/edit]

Still, I gots me 'em boneses and scaleses. :smile:
