I get your point, although the "real life" equivelent would be "Hello, Nigerian", or "Hello, Chinese", or "Hello, Irish".
Yeah....

I've noticed that in Skyrim (and Morrowind and Oblivion too) people refer to each other by using their race.

"Greetings, Breton!"

"Speak, Imperial."

"Well met, Dunmer!"

I know it isn't a big deal, but it's always bugged me! People in real life don't go around saying:

"Greetings, black person!"

"Hello, Asian man!"

"How are you, white guy?"

I've just always found these kinds of greetings in TES really odd. Maybe it's just me but I find it pretty funny.

Huh? Your examples are wrong, first, lol. Second, this exists in real life to a certain extent- "what's up, blood, shut your mouth honkey" but this is a concept widely used and accepted in literature. For better real life examples than the ones you've come up with, in the United States, we have Mid-Westerners, Southerners, Yankees, and those people are addressed that way when generalizations are made, and yes, even sometimes in individual face to face conversation-

You Yankees can't do much
You Southerners are inbred
You Mid-westerners love bible thumping
Don't ask that Yankee
Don't mind that Southerner
Don't worry about that Mid-westerner
Hi Hoosier

No, but they do say things like "Whas up, Brah?" or "Yo, [censored]." Gender and race specific greetings happen, they just tend to be casual / slang oriented.

Gotta agree with this guy, he is right. I have been called an "American".

Racial slurs weren't alway meant as demeaning, In the old west asians were called orientals, there are still quite a few people that call them that. So I don't really see what is so weird about this.

The word imperial as a race bugs me a little. The rest can get by being more like nationalities, beast-folk aside. But shouldn't folks be able to become imperial if they are citizens of the Empire?

I think that race is not enough represented in Skyrim. Guard may toss a "don't cross me, Elf" but beyond that nobody cares what race you are.

It's perfectly reasonable if you understand that people greet each other with racial slang irl.

Yeah Imperial is a bit of a strange name for a Race. What were they called before the Empire existed? What will they be called after it ends? What about a Redguard who was born and always lived in the Empire, is he not an Imperial too? Well no apprently he is not, an Imperial isn't someone who is part of the Empire its someone who is white and born in Cyrodil. Sure Cyrodillian or something would be more appropriate.

Wow, the lack of sense of humor in this thread is depressing. OP was just trying to make a funny observation.

OP: What's the deal with airline food?

Mob: it's very hard to cook on a plane, sir. Get your head out of your ass and you might figure that out.

Ive just had a very silly thing happen.

So Im in this Forsworn tower and I pickpocket the heart from a Briarheart. Loot the place and head out.
Outside there are three thugs wanting to teach me a lesson.
I dispatch them, read their contract, it was the Forsworn Briarheart who sent them against me.
For stealing his heart.

Maybe someone`s alreday said this, but you`re making the mistake of putting 21st century values on a game based on pseudo-Medieval times.

[snip]

Ah, Blade watcher, you say everything that's on my mind. I need never lift a finger when you're around.

Finally, someone in this thread hits upon the relevant point.

Sure, "Well met, Argonian" and "Speak, Imperial" and such like sounds awkward and ridiculous. And it is. But when you consider that its the sum total of all race diversity that Bethesda included in this game, its actually quite depressing. With ten races to represent, and all the roleplay and questline diversity that could bring; all that we have is an off-hand, and awkward, comment to distinguish that you are either an Argonian, or a Nord. That's it.

Despite all the prejudice against non-Nords that we see in the Stormcloak faction (and which is the central theme behind the entire civil war storyline), you would think that walking into Windhelm as an Argonian, Dunmer or Imperial would invoke some other reaction.

But it doesn't. And its a shame.

personally, i think the scroll series should have tons of so-called "racism." it's fake races, who cares.

in real life, lol, i have a japanese buddy that works at a store and i love coming up behind him and asking, "hey, do you know where the asian spice aisle is?"

Thank you! No one has been quite that mean yet, but a few people seem to have mistaken this thread for a genuine complaint.

Also in-game, there is no penalty for manslaughter-- that falls under self-defense. Man, pseudohistoric fantasy is so crazy like that.

Otherwise, political correctness is pretty silly in TES

Now let's compare a Dunmer to an Argonian. Completely different species, vehemently different skin color and..texture. One has an extra limb..etc, etc.

hah, you said vehemently

Well, considering some of the silly unimportant things some people complain about here, I can see where someone might make that mistake.
