Taking advantage of the eruption of Red Mountian That weakened Morrowind, The Argonians successfully and ruthlessly invaded mainland Morrowind, driving the remaining Dunmer out of their ancestral homeland and on to the small island of Solstheim.

Awesome.

Unfortunately for the Argonians, the very traits that enabled them to survive so well in the swamps of their homelands also made them ideal slaves for hard labor in regions of Morrowind that would prove unbearable to other races. During the Interregnum, bandits once again roamed the province in large numbers and entire tribes of Argonians were enslaved. In during the Imperial Simulacrum, a slave revolt escalated into the Dunmer instigating the Arnesian War with Black Marsh and taking a significant amount of territory (and undoubtedly many new slaves).

so the Dunmer enslaved them they got revenge. what do you think the dunmer did for em?

Though enslaving any civilized race is illegal in the rest of the Empire, the Dunmer of Morrowind had practiced it since time immemorial and continued to do so even after joining the Third Empire, despite the disgust and frustration of many people throughout Tamriel. This was due to the favorable conditions of the treaty under which Morrowind joined the Empire, which allowed the Dunmer to follow their ancient traditions.

So Dunmer were a bunch of arses then

I run a two handed argonian, exclusive to greatswords. Works very well - any fight you can't normally handle, histskin will often get you through. Having the best starting lockpicking skill in the game means never missing out on treasure.
Argonians do NOT need to be stealthy to play well.

edit - one thing to look out for- according to the wiki, the argonian male has a mass of .5. I set mine up to 1.3 for role play purposes (he's an acromegliac giant named "Krok") and found that I get staggered MUCH less often. I think stagger chances may be based partly on relative mass, in which case the stock argonian male had a BIG disadvantage as a straight up face bashing HtH character. The female is mass 1.0, just like almost all other races (including Nords) so may be a better choice if you play on x-box or ps3 and can't reset you mass via console. Or, yah know, I could be totally wrong.

Besides the slavery they have a lot of aspects in their culture that are actually quite good, you also have to remember that the slavery isn't racist. There are dark elf slaves as well...

Still yeah slavery is never a good thing, if it's worth destroying an entire country over? Especially after they already abolished slavery a few years earlier is hard to say.

Fed them, gave them somewhere to sleep, gave them jobs.. They should have just made nice belts out of their tails. But hind sight is always 20/20. Cutting down the hist should have been priority one looking back on it.

You have an awefully strange idea on kindness... All those things they could have had at home... More importantly, no matter how much the Dunmer might have wanted it, they could never have taken down the hist... They wouldn't even survive getting close to them.

True. The fact that the dunmer of Morrowind were raging racists didn't stop them from enslaving mer and men as well as beast races, but they did show a strong preference for Argonian and Kajhiit slaves, and a special disdain for them.

Still yeah slavery is never a good thing, if it's worth destroying an entire country over? Especially after they already abolished slavery a few years earlier is hard to say.
If it had been limited (as specified by the treaty with the Imperium) to internal maintenance of a system slavery, maybe not. But even after that, there was no abatement in cross-border raiding and capture & enslavement of Black Marsh citizens. So I say hell yes, smash those bastards. Finish what Red Mountain started. They are so proud of their history, let them live like their stone-age ancestors. (Actually, the Ashlanders pretty much do, and aren't such bad folks).

"Whenever I hear someone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally." - Abraham Lincoln

I'd recommend dropping this foolish race war discussion; it usually leads to pointless arguments on racial superiority, with name-calling and hurt feelings and whatnot on both sides. Not worth the time taken to type them out, in my opinion. If you're looking to fan the flames of this oft-repeated "discussion," there's a lovely storm brewing in the lore forums.

Now, if you're looking for some information on Argonian culture and spirituality, the Imperial Library has a good number of quotes from Infernal City and Lord of Souls on Argonians, and "The Argonian Account," an in-game book series, has some information on Black Marsh, though from an Imperial perspective.

Just having some lore fun. I'm not endorsing slavery in any way shape or form in real life. But I will never say argonians deserve to rule themselves. And who's this Abraham lincoin guy.. Is he an argonian? Sounds like it.

True. The fact that the dunmer were raging racists didn't stop them from solely enslaving the beast races, but they did show a strong preference for Argonian and Kajhiit slaves. Its not like they went raiding dumner settlements outside Morrowind for slaves....

True, but that probably has other reasons. Becuase those towns didn't exist, and all other towns near them were either in Cyrodiil or Skyrim. Both provinces with enough influeince in the Empire to declare outright war and seriously hurt the Dunmer, which wasn't good at the time because they were also fighting Dagoth Ur.

There is certainly an argument to be made for that, but like I said slavery was already abolished. This was therefore no longer a fight against slavery but a fight for justice/revenge. Whichever you prefer, and then it becomes a matter of complete personal opinion.

There's certainly elements of justice; with their long lives, the very same people who had committed war crimes against a province of the empire would still have been at large. And with slavery abolished, I doubt the position of ex-slaves was improved much, except now they lost the protection of at least being valuable property. But no doubt, there would have been a LARGE element of revenge in any argonian warriors heart, no matter what the strategic intent was. The argonian invasion of Morrowind may or may not have been just, but it was certainly inevitable and self imposed.
