Character creation problems

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 5:23 pm

So I make alot of characters and Skyrim, but I always face one big problem. That problem is that I am rarely happy with the characters I create. I play on the PS3 so mods are not an option. Does anyone else feel that they rarely make a character look like they want him to? I had such a hard time making Nords because their eyes always looked strange. I would playthrough the opening, get outside the cave and look at my character and be like :(

Are there any tips on making cool looking characters out there or videos showing off how to make a nice looking character without mods? This entire deal makes me envy PC gamers even more.

At the moment I am trying to make a cleric character but I have had to start the game over five times because I cannot be happy with how he looks in the game.

I think that the creation screen could use a bit of more light. It's kinda hard to see the details in there, like one half of the face is always more shadowy than the other.

I used this too. It helps a whole lot, makes you realise that the reason your character looked goofy before was that the eyes were a teeeeensy bit too far apart. :/

It's GOOD, sir!

Take a break after creating your character but before giving him a name. Walk away from the PS3 for half an hour or an hour and then go back and take a fresh look at him. When you're creating a face, you often get carried away with going after a certain look and then realize later that it's just too much. It's a weird kind of distortion that you don't notice while you're creating. I create characters all the time and I find they usually look much better after a second session later in the day or the day after. A lot of the magic of face creation has to do with a lot of very subtle details and it can be hard to get those details right when you're trying to duplicate an image from your imagination. When you can step back from it, you can be a lot more objective about it.

Edit: Bethesda's artists have a strange bias toward wide-set eyes. I often have to narrow them down to get something that looks a little more realistic. That might be something to check out.
