How old do races get in Elder Scrolls?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 2:07 pm

I'm writing a fanfic and I kinda need to know how old people can get in The Elder Scrolls ;)
I assume normal humans on average age until 50-60 (due to war, not so great healthcare and hygiene). Obv. this'd be longer for humans who can use magic to grow older.
Would elves also age like this, or do they age slower like in most fantasy worlds? I guess that Altmer live the longest, but purely because of magic to extend their lifespans. I wouldn't have any idea at how old Dunmer or Bosmer can be, or even how old an Altmer can become without magic.

It really depends on the station in life someone has.
A life of toil on a farm will make you die sooner than if you live in a palace and have access to the best healers.

Aptitude with magic also plays a role, there is some evidence that suggests that people who practice magic live longer.

A normal Imperial soldier may live for 50 years or so, but an Emperor can become 100-150.

A normal Dunmer may live for 100 years or so, but the mage-lord Divayth Fyr lived to be at least 4000.

There is a lot of room for variation, in short.

There was another thread where we were talking about if there might be any elves in Skyrim who were alive during the Oblivion crisis. Theres a quest in Morrowind that mentions a Dunmer who "is a mere child of 200 years." So a Dunmer's lifespan is probably quite long. I believe Divayth Fyr is a few thousand years old, though there is speculation that the more magically inclined one is, the longer they can live.

Altmer are the longest living race on Tamriel. One more to the long list of reasons why they are superior to everyone else.

I would check out alot of the lore you can find online, since definite answers probably won't be found. Theres some conjecture and some tall tales that hint toward the races life span. For example, I read somewhere that the curse of the orcs was a "short and violent life", and that the altmer didn't breed as much since they have longer lives (something I read also that lorkhan advised them to take smaller strides to live longer whatever that means). Khajiits and argonians I can't remember anything about. The few oddities (like the darkelf from morrowind that lived 4000 years) have dabbled in magic or something to extend their lives, but that isn't natural.

My theory is that Altmer (and many of the mer) lived extended lives (whether through magic or a natural long life) over the men (which is why they are so patient when it comes to this ongoing war, plotting and so forth). The orcs live perhaps as long as men (im assuming men live normal lives and the more privileged can live to 90+ years) which is short compared to their mer bretheren.

Im really curious about the khajiits and argonians though, reptiles should be able to live fairly long lives (like turtles) who knows if that applies to khajiit and argonians though.

Yeah but it can take thousands of years for them to replenish their numbers after a major war and it takes at most a few hundred for humans. At the end of the millennium humans will drown the elves in their own blood.

edit:
I am guessing that magic aside all men have the almost the same lifespan and all mer have almost the same lifespan, with Bretens being a possible exeption.

You are still considered to be a youngster if you are an Elf of 200 years and based on some things I’ve read + guesses I would think that the common non magical lifespan is around 700 years for elves. About 70-90 for humans, again this is not magical age. There are more examples of elves living longer than their 700 life span because they are a more magical race.

That is generally correct, apart from the Orsimer.

Im a bit hazy on this, someone jump in at any time, but as I recall the Nord's were cursed once to live only to about six or seven.
A god, Shor probably, gave part of the curse to the Orcs.
As I said, Im hazy on this one.

But Orsimer generally dont live past 40- ish.
As we learn in Skyrim, they seek an 'honourable death' before grey taints their hair.

well its like this (without magic)

1-altmer they live the longest (I think 1000 years is not strange to them)
2-dunmer (again a few centuries is not odd)
3-Bosmer (200-300 years is normal)
4-everyone else which is between 50 and 150 give or take
