Guilt of the Dovakhiin

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:14 am

I just visited Dragontooth Crater, a dragon lair in the Reach and did battle with the beast who had made his home there. After a long and arduous battle, I finally landed the killing blow upon my adversary and watched as the life left his form, his very soul rushing towards me and into me leaving behind an empty skeleton of a once mighty and proud beast. This is our blessing, and our curse, to be the destroyer of such an ancient and beautiful race.

So does anyone else feel bad when they kill dragons? I know in the game they are practically infinite, but from a lore perspective they aren't. In fact, I believe they are incapable of reproduction (perhaps someone can confirm this, I can't remember where I read it) meaning that each and every dragon you kill cannot be replaced. No new, young dragons to fill the void, no hope of resurrection of their dead once the Dovakhiin has taken their souls. Am I alone in thinking this is all extremely sad?

These dragons are motivated purely by the desire for more power and solely driven by this desire. Any sort of empathy or compassion seems beyond them (except for one). Don't feel too bad.

Well it seems that they've sided with Alduin who's trying to destroy the world...
Although, not all dragons are all world eatery.

Absolutely, I understand they are evil and must be killed. But that doesn't make it any less sad in my eyes. Perhaps moreso.

If something wants to eat your face, you kill it. Sure it's sad, but what are you going to do? Avoid dragons altogether, and miss out on a large part of the game? For what it's worth, I was absolutely gutted when I was fireballing a chaurus in the swamps, and accidently fried a fox, but the fox wasn't trying to rip my head off.

Of course not, I'm not suggesting they should all be spared... To save the world (and in many cases, your own skin) the dragons must be killed. There is no other option. I'm just wondering whether anyone else has spared a thought as they kill their natural foes to the tragedy of decimating such an amazing species. In my opinion, it would be a shame to see them extinct. MQ spoiler-

That's one of the reasons I chose to spare Paarthurnax.

I always wished that a certain dragon would be like Marcus from Fallout, helping his kind not be hell bent on destruction.
