how do i complete boethiahs calling?

i try to kill my companion while the shrine glows and i cant. i choose the "i need you to do something" option and tell her to use the pillar but nothing happens. my companion is mjalf the lioness.

Pick a different companion. Pretty sure she's set to essential.
