2022 news: "EA Games finally releases The Elder Scrolls VI"
"After a 10 year wait, EA Games finally released the long awaited RPG game The Elder Scrolls VI, available on Playstation 5, Xbox Kinect and Wii U2. The game is a sequel to one of the most successful games of the Neolithic generation, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
"The Elder Scrolls VI has been in development for the last 10 years and has been labeled many times as vaporware. After Bethesda Game Studios, creator of the original series, went bankrupt during the development, Electronic Arts bought the rights to finish the game and to release it. According to an EA representative, 'our goal was to respect the original decision that the game would only be released after all the bugs were fixed'.
"Industry sources confirmed last year that the added pressure to release a bug free game and the added cost of having hundreds of testers drained most of the resources of the late Bethesda Game Studios. Todd Howard, producer of The Elder Scrolls series, was replaced seven years after initial development had begun. According to some sources, he had to be taken to a mental institution after he suffered a nervous breakdown and tried to physically assault some of his coworkers with a knife, claiming that they were all bugs and had to be squashed.
"It remains to be seen how the game will perform in sales, though, especially because the RPG market has been dominated in the last years by the hugely successful The Witcher franchise. Early reports are disheartening for EA Games, with some reviewers reporting that The Elder Scrolls VI is 'massively outdated in terms of graphics' and that it 'uses an old gameplay mechanic that The Witcher left behind years ago'. Other critics pointed out that the game was being developed for the old Xbox Xcite and Playstation 4 systems and that, despite some updating, it still is not on the same level of games released for the newest consoles.
"Sales numbers so far are equally dismal. According to some sources, The Elder Scrolls VI has sold only 147 units so far, three days after it was released. Apparently the game was bought only by old members of the extinct Bethesda Forums. One of them wrote on the official EA forums: 'I appreciate the fact the game is bug free, but I'm just not interested in the series anymore. I can hardly wait for the release of The Witcher 12, though. Let's just hope it is less buggy than the last one'."
