There's a million reasons I'll never have a follower, and this is one of them.

Have you played Morrowind? The joy of followers who uses strong area effect spells while you are in melee with an weak enemy is only improved then you find that the fool dies in two hits then I let him tank, and yes he took great care to stay in my line of fire.. AI in Skyrim is scary smart.

I let Lydia die because of this. She would do the opposite of the enemy - jump in front of me as I fired instead of out of the way. I don't have that problem with mage followers. Unfortunately all will spoil ambushes, even if I have them wait 30+ feet back.

You can't seriously be comparing them! it's been a decade since Morrowind ... practically an era in computer terms ... of course there are going to be huge advances in AI in games in a decade.

That doesn't mean that self-destructing Companion AIs are excusable.

that's why newvegas had a superior companion wheel. you could direct them with much more control.

in fact, everything about the companions in vegas was better.

Probably already posted, but just in case it hasn't:

The reason your single arrow can kill your follower, but dragons can't, is because you completely ignore their submitting. When your follower get his/her clock cleaned, they go to one knee and drop aggro. You, being the ruthless bastard you are, ignore this, and the arrow you were going to shoot into their knee, goes into their neck. Because they are kneeling now.

God, you are such a jerk!

Personally insulting answer and a load of BS.

Anyone got anything constructive to add to the discussion, instead of lowering the tone?

Yeah I killed my follower a couple of times at first as well.. then I didn't anymore because it's not hard to shoot around them.

Most of the time it's not hard to shoot around them, correct.

I'm talking about when they run right across in front of you AS you're shooting an arrow. Impossible to avoid.

Too pissed off to even find out if this has been discussed before ....

I swear, if my Follower, Uthgerd the Unbroken (suggested alternative name: ... the Ugly), runs across my line of fire when I'm aiming an arrow one more time, I'll .... I'll .... send ugly escort girls to Bethesda HQ night and day!

Could they not have come up with a way for the AI to realize that, when you draw an arrow on a bow, you're about to fire it??

Furthermore, who came up with the idea of YOU being the only person who can kill your own Follower?

Uthgerd survives battles with dragon, bears and multiple Falmer only to be taken out by ... yours truly with one arrow!

So frustrating as I have to reload because she's carrying a shedload of gear for me .. and she doesn't natter on constantly like Mjoll, so I actually like adventuring with her.

Is this silly AI behaviour too deeply embedded in the game code to be fixed with a future patch?

My solution to this problem was simple:

1. Wabbajack my follower every level. My follower gets more HP, becomes stronger, levels up, does not die as easily...especially when i hit him/her on acciddent.

2. After Wabbajacking follower...ignore who your follower engages and work on someone else...Wabbajacked followers like Lydia can tank Drauger Deathlords single handed...no need for me to help or babysit them...i just let them tank...

3. always give your follower a few healing potions to carry...they will use them..thus when their HP gets low they will heal themselves preventing you from killing them accidently...

Some good suggestions here, I'll check them out. Currently on my 2nd playthrough atm, haven't gone to get Wabbajack yet, but I certainly will. Thanks.

get closer? how far away are you that in the time your arrow strikes your target, your companion has moved clear into your shot, when before they weren't? also if they are THAT close as you're releasing your arrow, strafe so they aren't..
