Conjurer mage?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 9:14 am

Now, i've got a level 38 shield/1-hander with an occasional Flame Atronach to go along with it and of course, when needed, a bow..

But I've been thinking about making a new toon that specializes in Conjuration, so i would be using summoned atronachs etc.

What weapon should i use? Conjured blade & bow?

What armor? light armor? Heavy armor?

And have any of you ever done this, how hard is it? I would imagine it is hard at the beginning, but eases out as you get to higher levels?

So i would probably be leveling primarily Conjuration, One-Handed, Archery and perhaps Restoration for healing skills?

And of course, if i use proper armor, i would probably be leveling my smithing up as well.

Well, that's weird. I copied it off another forum i had posted the question on and it somehow kept the formatting, even though it had no [COLOR] tags..

Well, it's fixed now.

I would comment on your helplessness, but i don't want to start flame wars.

My main is a pure conjurer and you don't need any weapons or armor and just basic healing spells if you want. I never need them however. Your pets will do all your killing for you.

My first char was a mage skilled in...

Conjuration
Alteration
Illusion

Anything else what you want. Those three skills can play the entire game. I retired her at level 47 as a DID character.

As far as armor....why? You never get hit. It was a blast. The thing that makes it fun is avoiding combat while your minions do the work.

How did you start out? Which race?

And should i just go acquire some atronach summoning spell or something right after i get out of Helgen in the start? As well as a Conjure blade

What did you use Alteration and Illusion for?

Conjuration, archery, sneak is a powerful combo. light armor and one-hand blade as backup. Some smithing/enchanting/alchemy but take care not to level them quickly. You need to concentrate on damage/defense at first.

What did you use Alteration and Illusion for?
Illusion - basically controls the battlefield. Spells like Calm and Frenzy. And then there is Invisibility.
Alteration - The defense school w/ Mage Armor and Magic Resistance. Although you may hardly ever take damage, it is good to have. Spells like Oakflesh, Mage light, and Paralyze.

This.

Just wear robes. I'm an Altmer and use Destruction and Illusion as secondary skills.

Conjuration focused characters are pretty darn strong.

If you get the mystic weapon perks, with either dual wielding, two handers or bows, they are pretty good.

The conjured bow is easily the best out of all three however.

Dual wielding bound swords wearing enchanted vaerminas robes looks rather dashing imho.

A good race for a conjurer is Breton, they start out with 25 conjuration skill and have that nice 25% magicka resistance.

Hey, I'm reviving this thread because i made my conjurer mage, but i would like to know where to find the best robes i can?

I'm using some Apprentice conjuration robes(12% less cost for con. spells & 75% magicka regen.) and some fortify magicka gear at the moment.

This is where Enchanting would come in. I don't know if you've been working on that skill or not, but if you have the room in your build it can be a very handy choice (so I hear - I haven't actually used it much myself).

My impression is that you can enchant better gear than you can find most, if not all, of the time. I've made a couple mages in Skyrim, and both times (with very limited Enchanting skill), I was using the robes you describe, or slightly better/worse versions of them. Beyond doing the whole College questline, I don't know off the top of my head where there would be better robes just lying around.

Just a question, but can you have an atronach and a reanimated corpse at the same time or does one dismiss the other? Haven't tried it, but was curious.

You can find better robes as you level your conjuration (I think the conj. trainer at the college has them as you level the skill) or sometimes find them on random mages you fight. Enchanting can make better ones, I believe, but you need to get the enchanting pretty high to do so (80+). You can train it to speed up the process while leveling it by using it.

I've had good luck with illusion spells like calm, fear, and fury. They come in handy if your atronach goes down or someone is targeting you instead.

****Spoiler alert****

If you're very early on in the game you can get some necromancers robes which offer better stats than your current ones. West of helgen is a small mountain range, if you go towards the centre of that on the north side is a giants camp but further west of that is a cave entrance called shriekwind bastion. This is a pass through the mountain. Inside this path is a necromancer and a few skeletal guardians, also watch out for some defensive runes on the floor. The necromancer is fairly powerful if you're lower level but he has necromancer robes and they give a better bonus than yours, you can also get a few decent potions from this place and its a fairly short pass through the mountain (should take you 10 mins or less).

The best robes are the arch-mage robes. Get those and the mask of moriki or however you spell it and your regeneration will be fine. What I did with my conjurer is I first traveled to winterhold college, bought the soul trap spell, and leveled conjuration quickly up to 100 for the twin soul perk. Than I did the college quests to become leader of the college. Now i'm all set. Never had to enchant a thing.

Only when your conjuration skill reaches the level to have two summons, otherwise you can only have one or the other.

a pure conjurer without another dmg school sounds interesting, but whats up with dragon? can you do the mainquest, if you focus on not even using bows?

So the main consent is train up enchanting and make my own robes or use the arch mage ones. But what should i enchant to become my mage robes? Where can i find normal robes?

@rektoh, I've been using conjured blades and bow, and the atronachs help against dragons as well.

My conjurer uses 2 flame atronarchs and I have a wizard companion so they take down the dragons. I actually use heavy armor and a shield and never hit attack anything since i'm focused on conjur and restoration. Its quite effective.

I was a mage specializing in Destruction. Then I trained my Conjuration. Once both of these were at least 90, I stopped using magic. I favor the bow now, you swordmen out there. If I happen to run out of arrows or overwhelmed(rarely), I switch to Destruction.

Without getting into spoilers, unenchanted robes (and hoods) can be found as various loot, and at some shops. You can also enchant any plain clothing items.

However, I recommend questing your way through the Mages college, and use enchanting for your other slots (boots, gloves, etc.).
