Lovely game, but one question. . .

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 4:11 am

The pathfinding on thralls and other like summons. . . Why is it so terrible?

I guess I'm no expert, but I noticed that whenever I enter a new room with Lydia, or any actual companion, they load (get moved by the game) in with me regardless of where they were. The same goes for quick traveling. Would it be difficult to make thralls do that in an upcoming patch? They seem to get lost very frequently and don't follow nearly as reliably as actual followers. I was under the impression there shouldn't be a difference between the way a summon follows you and a companion does.

Other than the summon's really, really sub-par pathfinding, loving the game. But since I went conjurer (love summoners) it's been something of a hindrence. In a future patch I'd really like to at least see thralls indefinitely loaded to the characters position upon coming out of a quick travel or entering a room that requires loading like companions. The fact they don't after 3 patches just sort of strikes me as a lazy loose end or gross oversight someone forgot to knot. It wouldn't be any REAL problem at all. Except that I deck out undead thralls in cool gear, so it really svcks when they just up and vannish. . . Please and thanks.

You have noticed correctly. As to why, who knows? In Oblivion summons were smarter, they would move in front of me. It kind of defies the purpose of using summons if I am the one who has to lead them into a cell full of enemies.

OP knows that, maybe he's just suggesting they have a look at it? Simple as that.

Beths don't have looks at things, they don't do requests, they don't read general talk forums and don't give a damn unless the problem is something on par with a disabled dude having problems playing. Simple as that.

They have problems like PS3 memory leaks to work on, so thrall pathfinding is not a priority.

But they DO have looks at things, they DO do requests if everyone is requesting something be fixed (I.E blood on the ice). It's called responding to customer feedback. Simple as that.

Alright then, I dare an employee of Bethesda to post here and fix the problem OP is having within, say, a month or two (Let's give them some time, they are awfully busy counting all the money).

Just for the sake of proving or dis-proving a point.

That isn't necessary, as problems that have already been fixed are a direct result of a bug list on this forum that beth devs have used to fix problems.

Agree with you OP, Atronachs are sub par, but they tend to lag behind alot making the Atronach Thrall spells completely useless. Dead Thralls seem to have a mind of their own and dont want to Fast Travel with you some times... So you need to keep going back and forth from your last fast travel point in order for them to bloody follow you which is really annoying....

Not really, no, they just never looked into region blocking and there were half a dozen people with the same complaint. It's been six months and the problem is still there. I don't believe that something much less trivial will actually get their attention.

Whats that got to do with this thread tho? If you have a problem with something make your own thread/contact Bethesda, don't derail someone elses thread.

Nope, either you started your thread off in a bad way, or you posted it at a time when the Mods are asleep and the tards are awake.

There were several threads, each starting once the old one reached a post limit of 200, spanning from August to November. I'm pretty sure mods don't hibernate that long. But you are correct, tards were indeed awake and all I got were russophobic comments and trolling.

Let's stop with off topic right here.

Atronach's are far from useless- indeed in this game conjuration is one of the most powerful trees for a pure mage especially!

Many a time have my atronachs held off multiple enemies for while I healed or been a massive aid in bringing down a boss, yes their pathfinding can be at times underwhelming but seriously the way you guys are banging on!

'Completely useless' hyperbolic to the extreme!!!!

I found the summoner tree to be ONE of the most powerful, equally on par with destrucction.

But I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this (figured I wouldn't be). I just hope the developers, or someone who works for them notices this. And goes: Oh yeah, why didn't we do this? And on the really negative guys point: conjuration is a whole skill in the game. It should perform smoothly. The thralls add a LOT of gameplay value. There's no reason their pathfinding shouldn't be tweaked to make them follow you better. If I were in charge I'd have scheduled it in a patch or put it in a hot fix a long time ago. At least make them force load into whatever cell you're at like with companions upon entering a new area that requires loading. IE: walking into a building.

There is always dremora lords. I've found I just end up recasting them like fireballs if they aren't where I need them, dropping them right in front of the enemy. So conjuring is far from useless, as another poster said. THAT gets the job done. But undead thralls are just so immensely cool. And the point of thralls is to avoid recasting. A lot of that could be prevented by simply having them load (aka teleport) to your position when entering new places or after fast travel. : D

A thought: it's easy for stuff to get buried and lost in the forums. So if anyone wants to see this kind of change incorporated in the next patch, feel free to bump the topic. If it stays on top long enough, it's likely to get noticed by someone connected enough to the devs for them to see it and either get it done, or take it into obvious consideration.

So, for me:
