Why the rage against Steam?

Okay, maybe it's because I'm a fan of Steam and use it for all my PC gaming anyway, but I really don't get the huge fuss some people make about Steam being required. When I put my disc copy in and watched it launch Steam, I was thrilled. It means I never have to put this disc in a computer again, I can always just download through Steam on whatever computer I want.

Is it Steam's offline mode being iffy? I fully admit that can be an issue, not sure if it's just me but I often have to be in online mode first to trigger offline mode and make it work, or have it set to offline mode by default. Which, yeah, annoying, I admit, but some of the complaints I'm seeing make it seem like Steam, which, if you ask me, should win an award for the most unobtrusive DRM on the planet, is somehow ruining Skyrim for them.

This isn't a 'Oh my god, you're wrong, Steam is the greatest thing EVAR' thing, it's more that the complaints I'm seeing come from a place so far out of my own personal experience that I'm honestly curious what it's like on the other side. It's like meeting an alien species. You're going to have questions.

So, steam-haters. Exactly what's the big fuss all about?

There's a centralized thread for discussing Steam. It's currently on http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1331715-unofficial-steamdrm-discussion-26/ so there's plenty of content there if you want to see why some people don't like it. :)
