Tips to saving multiple characters on the Xbox

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:00 am

One of the issues that originally i had problems with, was playing more then 1 character and saving them, without me accidently overwriting one of my characters over the other.

The problem is on the default setting, the game autosaves after every 15 min, saves on fast travel, traveling into new locations, as well as when you sleep or wait.

Now if you don't change this, then your going to have a problem, if you want to play several characters, become the save list will get extremley long.

This is what ive done. Disable autosaves, disable saving on fast travel, traveling, sleep/wait. So now the game won't save at all, unless i manually save.

Then make 3 save slots (if you have 2 characters, 3 per each). I believe 3 is a decant number.

You may think this actually hurts gameplay, since what if you forget to save, or save at the wrong moment?

To fix this issue, use common sense. For example before going into a dangerous area which you know is full of hostiles.....save at least on 1 save slot. Then when you go in use your other save slots while going through the area (keep switching back and forth on the 2 free slots). If anything goes wrong while saving in the dungeon, then you always have the save slot at the entrance.

These tips here are beneficial exspecially when there is more then 1 person in your family who share 1 xbox to play skyrim (even worse when say 2+ people each create more then 1 character).

Another tip, is when say your in a city, and you want to end for the day. Save on all 3 save slots (don't do this if your in danger, like being attacked by a dragon). That way, the name of the city would show on your save slot. This is helpful in remembering which save slot belongs to which character when you want to load/save a game.

For example, say i had a lizard and a nord, and i know my Argonian has never went to Solitude...while my Nord has. So if i look in the save list....i know the 3 slots that are called SOLITUDE are not for my Argonian. This is helpfull, because there is less of a chance of accidently overwritting a save.

To finish up, if you use these tactics of mine, everytime you start up you may have to check the settings again. For sometimes the settings that i changed get restarted back to default (this doesn't happen all the time), then you would have to change them again.

Hoped that help.

Yeah, this is exactly what I do as well. It's already saved me a couple of times.

I don't understand what you mean with the autosaves though. I thought on default, there could only be 3 possible autosaves max. At least, that's how it's been for me, and I've never touched the settings for autosaves.

There is a save bug on Xbox that if you save multiple times and the saves trail off the screen they disappear. They still exist but you cannot see them I tested this, I save twenty times from save 600 to 620. Saves 600-610 was invisible then I started deleting saves and the save started popping back up then save 601 disappeared and then reappeared when I deleted a few more saves.

Also when you try to overwrite one save it completely overwrites the wrong file, if I try to save over 612 to it will save over 608 its really annoying and needs to be fixed.

Yeah it seems buggy indeed. Sometimes when I overwrite lots of saves, the name of the save stays the same (regardless if I overwrite it at a different location), even though the picture clearly demonstrates it's my most recent save. It's a shame

Save your last save for a character onto cloud that way it's impossible to overwrite it on your harddrive.

It is truly a shame, even more so that this is regarding your save files. What your reporting is another serious save game issue indeed.

To fix this issue, use common sense.
I found the flaw in your suggestion: If we all had common sense, we'd be living in a warless, recessionless utopia.

I've got my own method:
I use the same 4 saves for each character. Every subsequent save of any sort increases that save number by one. I know where the saves of one character stop and the next one start because there is a MASSIVE difference between the numbers.
Really... the whole 123,124,125,126,270,271 thing is a bit of a dead giveaway.

uhm... it never uses more than 3 auto-save slots.... for the record.

That said... at the end of every gaming session I make a last save with that character and delete ALL prior saves for that character.

So I only ever have 1 save per character.

I would much Much MUCH rather have had a "Switch Character" option... with each character having their OWN SEPARATE LIST of saves

ahh well... what's there to do?
