Okay, that first meeting with Aela, Farkas, and Ria, while they are fighting the giant. Aela only recognizes your help fighting it if you use a melee weapon (not sure about unarmed). I tested it several times with the latest patch installed.

Use a bow and it's like you weren't even involved. Hit the stupid giant with a sword and suddenly you're awesomesauce.
