I was debating which forum to post this question to. If this is the wrong one, mods please feel free to move it.

I have Amren's sword in my inventory. My current encumbrance is 89. The sword weighs 9. I gave him the sword and noticed my encumbrance still says 89 when it should say 80.

Do certain quest items still use up encumbrance even when removed?

I think quest items usually don't weigh anything in the first place, even if they say they do, so that's probably why.

No, it's that the quest item wasn't adding to encumbrance in the first place.

All quest items still say their weight limit but in actual fact have no weight at all. While you were carrying the item it should of in fact said 98 and then 89 after removing it, but seeing as they have no weight, they don't. If you were to steal an item back after the quest was considered complete, then there would be weight added to it.
