Developing your character early on ?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 8:22 pm

Not much of an RPG gamer so i feel like i've got a lot on my plate taking on Skyrim. Obviously in the beginning the character will be very weak and will most likely get killed by anything.

Whats the best way to develop a character in the beginning ? what tips and advice would you give to kick me off in the right direction ?

as far as my character goes i want him with Heavy Armour, Sword and Shield.

I just work on developing your weapon and defense skills first.
In your case one-handed,heavyarmor and block.
Then I start to work on a crafting skill.

The steel smithing perk is well worth it at low levels for a character like yours, and should be available right out of the gate. Use any smithing potions you find to improve your main armor first, then other items (probably shield and helmet). Weapon skills will take care of themselves, I figure. Block is a bit tougher- you actually need to let yourself get attacked and spend time blocking rather than attacking to increase that.

Get out, explore, and grow.

Don't be afraid to run from a fight if you have to...he who lives by running away gets to fight another day.

Don't play 'dead is dead' characters until you have some experience with role playing or the game (dead is dead is a term used by people where they finish a character after he or she is killed, no saves, etc. It's pretty hardcoe, and a lot of effort, but it can be very satisfying).

As far as starting out, a heavy armoured one-handed and shield character is a good safe start which will see you through the game well. Just have a good look at all the skill perks for all the skill trees, and try and plan out which are good for your character...not everything is as wondrous as it seems.

I've started the game with this same build more or less. Playing a male nord with 1 handed, shield, heavy armor, [edit: and smithing] block, archery, sneak, speech, alchemy perks. I play on adept and I can still die pretty easy if I get hit by mages or multiple melee attackers.

Invest in health and stamina during level up, unless you plan on using magic. Get used to finding every merchant that sells health potions and revisit them all often. Some situations required me to burn through health like nothing.

At level 34 I'm starting to feel pretty powerful.

i would also suggest doing your exploration within a small radius and slowly expanding. don't worry about doing all the quests you initially get, and, instead, get to know the lay of the land before you move on to the next area.

Just go with the flow. The universe tends to unfold the way it should.

I t hink you got alot of good advice, so I think I'll just add one thing.

Alchemy can be your friend. I just make what I need at low lvl's, so that making potions doesn't cuase me to lvl up to fast.
Spoiler
Blue mt flower and monarch butterfly wings, blisterwart, and wheat. are easy to find and make good health potions
