The law and punishment

it's ridiculous...let me explain why, so i was doing a quest where you were required to talk to some one over at Ivarstead , i traveled there and had to break into her house to talk to her (yes i know i could of waited) so i picked the lock and started talking to her, bearing in mind that no one saw me enter and i know that no one left, because she was the only one in the house at that time, suddenly a guard burst in and started hacking chunks out of me! this doesn't make any sense to me, i know Nords are supposed to be barbarians or whatever but what happened to simply arresting you, like they did in OB? wait there's more, i picked someones pocked and they caught me BAM they start attacking me and i can't yield because they hate me! XD why don't they either give you a warning first or just go straight into the dialog where you choose to go to jail pay etc? does anyone else have this problem to? mainly thief characters that would have these kind of problems i guess, and thanks for reading. :)

He attacked you without prompting to arrest you first?Sounds like a bug to me, they are supposed to arrest you first, they usually do with me.

The best way to handle it is to summon an atronach (or equivalent) and let your beastie kill the guard. OR if you have a companion, they can handle it.
That way, while you'll still have the bounty, you won't draw any more aggro (nor accumulate more bounty) once that stupid guard is dead.

^This.

If your weapons ARE sheathed... draw them out and put em back away.

Guards will almost always stop (unless you've been on a guard killing rampage  ) when you sheathe weapons and attempt arrest.

PROTIP: If you have ANY stolen items when a guard comes to arrest you... say "ID RATHER DIE!" then run, interact with a barrel (remember which one!) and store all your stolen loot. Draw your sword and when the guards catch up, put it away and let them arrest you. After they sort out your bail, walk back to the barrel to get your booty

Unfortunetely, it doesn't always work. Sometimes guards will auto attack without trying to arrest you first, even if you put your weapons away.

Generally if you sheath sword and just stand there, a guard will come up and talk to you. Depends how evil you were.

However, I am practicing my pickpocket lately. Tried to grab a necklace and got caught. Everyone started attacking me. Stood still and waited for the guard, then bribed him. But the guy I pickpocketed then went on a mad killing spree on the citizens of Riften. The guards took down a couple of folks too. Kind of disturbing.

Reminds me of the best way to deal with children... since they're invincible: Cast frenzy on them... near their own parents. Manipulating an annoying brat into killing her own mother is somehow satisfying... but watching her do it is the best thing.

... O'course why that reminds me is that I did an AoE frenzy on those kids in Solitude... and all hell broke loose. Slaughter in the streets.

OMG my Assassin (also my Illusion specialist) is totally going to do this.

He's totally wicked... kills any guard he finds alone like he's got an OCD for it :P

They removed the "STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCRUM!" line of dialogue. So now they just attack.

yep, i tried this but i kinda died in the first few hits I'm only level 13, so i had to reload and the same thing happened over and over until i load a save before the whole thing XD

i like the old way of blocking and talking to the guard, much better way of going quietly IMO
