The axe of...

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 9:03 pm

Anyone else feel slightly underwhelmed with the honor of receiving the sacred weapon of a hold when becoming a thane?

It's like:
"My hero, in honor of your services I present you with this axe, for generations its' blade has protected the walls and people of this city!"

"Oh... gee... thanks, it's a really... nice blade, I am going to take really, really good care of it (hey...Sven, get over here, can you go and disenchant this thing when you have the chance)."

I'm disappointed in all of the weapons and armor in the game. I shouldn't be able to craft items that are 10x more powerful than Daedric artifacts.

blade of... would have been a better title.

The random ones can be quite ok, at least early in the game. I wasn't too disappointed when I ran across a shield with +60 fire resistance at level 15, kind of took care of that dragon problem we had in Skyrim (well half of them at least...).

The weapon doesn't bother me as much as being thane has no effect on the population. The first time I got the axe of whiterun I carried it around town expecting people to bow at my feet or at least say say congratulations or give me a discount or something. But no, guards called me a "mead fetcher" and a "sneak thief", everyone else acted like I was a stranger in town. Even my neighbor warmaiden kept asking if I knew who her father was. Yes lady, he just sold me the house next door. And Nazeem, that [censored] asks me if I get to the cloud district. Guess what dude, i go there all the time and I've never ONCE seen you up there.

My favorite is getting a "Blade of [insert city-name here]", and it turns out to be...

...a mace.

Better yet is getting a "Blade of [random]" from General Tullius in the Civil War questline and instead of getting a blade, you get a shield. A SHIELD. Not even a weapon.

I end up displaying the Weapon-of-Town in my home of that town, usually in the display at the head of the bed. Proudspire doesn't have a display there though and often times I've got something better I'd rather display as there aren't enough racks for my liking.

The very first one can be useful for a little while if you get it right away. It doesn't take long to replace it though. I'm not disappointed with the weapons overall. I do wish there were more special weapons to be found. I went through nearly every location on my first character and found only a few unique items and none of them were very special. I guess we'll have to depend on modders to toss in some nice items.

You can become Thane of Whiterun at a very early level. You want people bowing and scraping before your level 3 character?

Theres nothing wrong with the thane weapons. They are good and strong. Good to use if you do use them. And they are badges of office afterall. You don't have to use them. I used mine when I got them if it was my style.
I keep all mine and display them in my houses. I don't use the 2 handed weapons with my duel wielding magic, one handed sword, or sword/magic and shield mage.
I would never destroy them, they're my badge of office.

I suppose the populace should notice your thaneship more but it does'nt matter.
You can bribe guards as a thane, that is more important.

Anyway, Thane might not mean that much to people. You don't make any rules or rule them so they don't care.

I agree, I wish there are more privileges to being a thane other than getting a housecarl and a blade of [enter city name]. I even usually sell these weapons right away.. Maybe that's why it's so easy to become thane : because there's not much benefits out of it. If we actually get extra privileges such as .. a free house or influences to change the city, then I guess becoming thane should be harder, too.

seems like an oversight, but err, they should be scaled for the materials. I think the ones from the civil war line are. Not sure why they didnt do tat for thane weopons. lvl 40, "I decree you are now thane of Windhelm! take this blade as your badge of office." turns out to be an Iron sword that does 15 points of stamina dmg. At lvl 40 it could at least be Elven, or Glass so i could smith it up to be a relatively potent weopon.

I think (at least some) coincide with the level you are. For example, I didn't do anything for Whiterun until lvl 20, and I got a elven axe. Which starts showing up as loot and on vendors at level 20 ish. Next in line might've been Glass, I imagine. I think the level for those is 27.

edit: The good thing about them, I guess, is they have good enchants. I mean, if you don't have enchanting, they last for awhile.

Then... don't?

I know this isn't the response people usually like to hear, but if you don't want your character to be the greatest smith in all the lands, don't make him one. The idea is to roleplay and put limitations on your character yourself. Bethesda expects people to play their games this way, which is why they did little to limit us with game mechanics.

Yah I see your point.

But the fact that a Nord would consider a Thane as their equal or perhaps even lesser then them kind of fits. I always viewed them as more ceremonial then functional, kind of like a sacrificial dagger that no one would ever wield in combat. Only used to stick in the chest of the voluptuos virgin that has been captured and staked out.

Becoming a thane is like getting an honorary degree from a college, it doesn't make you any smarter/better than you were previously, just that they appreciate what you have accomplished so here is something nice to show for it.

Hang it on your wall and swell with pride.

Or trash it, either way.
