I've played the game for a while now and gone through many of the quests, and it seems to be a bit lacking in likeable or sympathetic characters. For a heroic-type adventure it helps to have likeable characters to make the world feel like its worth saving.
What are some of your favorite characters? And do you think the towns and factions have enough of these to draw you in?
Lots of cute old characters and nice guys about the place. However I got a Dark Brotherhood contract to take out a quirky old lady recently. I guess it is my job so I sent her to the void. Felt conflicted about it though.
Hod in riverwood seems like a decent fella. Me and Ralof showed at around 3 in the morning and Hod showed us where everything is and helped us drink up all the mead.Next morning I think he was still drunk because he was standing in the front yard pretending to work the lumber mill.
I like lots of the characters . Plenty seem like interesting folks to me. Then again my mind fills in a lot of details from the snippets they give me.
For example, my whole family plays and we gave my youngest daughter a hard time when she stole form Ysolda . She ended up stealing the quest object but leaving her some gold.

The grumpy old farmer outside of Markarth is a good one. I thought he was quite amusing.
I liked Erandur, not sure why. He's one of the few I did actually like.
I just did that quest recently and did enjoy his story and character, making amends for past mistakes. Reminds me a bit of Martin from Oblivion who also dabbled with the daedra in his youth.
Will probably forget a few, but these seem okay to me:
Klimmek (Ivarstead) - just a nice chap trying to help out it seems Kharjo (trader guardian) - The Khajit chap looking for his moonstone Gwilin (Ivarstead) - Wood elf I think Deerkeethus (Dark Water) - Argonian chap
er .. okay, that's all I can think of right now ... you may be right ...

I feel the same way as you. I took him as a follower to the Sightless Pit. We got jumped by 3 or 4 Falmer at one point and he kept dying (had to reload as I didn't want that on my conscience). Once we made it through I had to send him back. Now he is with the blades with snotty saying "I am sworn to carry your burdens" Lydia.
Some characters usually go on the way to being 'liked' by me, but most of the time they never have enough depth as a character to really get to know.
Erandur is an example of a character that is both likeable while still having enough depth as a character.
In general tough not enough characters really make you care about their fates as person, they stay NPCs and only valuable as long as they have a part in the plot.
There is not enough depth to like or hate any of them. We know more about some objects, one tree, a few places, then the people of Skyrim. I know more about some of the long dead "explorers" then about the person sitting around my house or my wife aka personal shop/pack animal.
I think Belethor who keeps the shop in Whiterun is quite an easygoing lad. And the cheery orc bard in Morthal's Moorside Inn has my symphathy since no one likes him.
There are some interesting personas in Skyrim, but not that much colourful ones. Skyrim needs more people like Glarthir in Oblivion.
I'm in agreement with SubRosa, Wylandriah is pretty funny, and treats the player decently. Falk Firebeard seems like a decent chap and has more interaction with player than most of the admittedly shallow characters in Skyrim.
