Having followers is a waste

Having a follower in Skyrim is like babysitting a 6 year old with down's syndrome.

Followers are definatly a pain in the behind. Sure they can be benificial at time but they seem to get in the way half of the time.

My first character was a MELEE type. When I had warrior type Follower all that follower was get in the way. Some times they would draw away some of the attention from me but, they just jumped in front of my sword usually.
If my Follower hung back and used a bow they helped me out fairly well but even the followers that were good Archers still seemed to Melee attack when they should just hang back and take pot shots at the enemy.
I had the most luck useing a magic user type Follower with my Melee character. They always hung back and never got in the way of my melee attacks.
However I couldnt seem to get my magic user Follower to upgrade their Robes at all even when I gave them Master level equipment.
Since I was a Master Blacksmith and a Master Enchanter My Melee type followers all had really, really, REALLY great gear. I still thought they died way to easy in melee combat.

My second character is a MAGE type character. I have found ALL melee type followers to be 100% useless. My Follower ALLWAYS gets between me and my target.
I have not tried pairing up my Mage character with a Mage type follower though. That might actually be a good combo.

On a scale of 1-10, I give Followers a "4" for usefulness. They can work if their NOT Melee fairly well but, Melee types seem to be useless except as a diversion.....Don't get me started about them allway blocking doorways when indoors.....(not as bad as Morrowind though)

Kharjo is pretty cool. The only NPC who ever showed concern for me for doing him a favor.

I'm sorry but...

The fault is entirely yours. A melee character does not need a melee follower. He needs a ranged or magic follower. Likewise a mage would need a beefy metal hunk to keep mobs entertained while he blasts them from afar not another mage or archer type who dies real quick. Sheesh, go play some WoW and learn about raid party setups man. There's a gap in your education.

1.Everybody wants to play the game there own way/style. There is nothing wrong with a Melee character having a Melee follower. Sure a well balanced pairing is more benificial and the way to go. However you should still be able to pair up with a second Melee. The problem (unlike in WoW) is not that you and your follower can't beat enemies because a balanced party is needed to survive but that the A.I. is soooo stupid that Melee Followers become useless sometimes because they constantly get in your way during battle. Therefore being killed by you, the person they are following. Try pairing your Mage character with a Melee follower...lets see how many times you blow his punk azz up with a fireball spell. Its pretty sad actually.

2. Comparing the game strategy in an Elderscrolls game to WoW? Seriously?...thats not even comparing apples and oranges, at least they are both fruit....you are comparing apples and brusselsprouts...they may both be food but are at different ends of the food scale.

So on my newest character I thought I would try out by not using magic other than restoration. I would start depending on followers to help me during rough times. Come to find out that they're so damn useless. They drag behind. What's even more devastating is in fact that one of the companions, Vilkas, was beaten down by a WOMAN bandit! According to sources Hes suppose to be master in 2 handed weapons.... in that bandit fight it proved otherwise.

Edited: I corrected the name.

Hi,

kudos to you for daring to be PIC(politically incorrect). OT but anyway:

- one of the dialogue quotes that really makes me weep is that abt. "strong Nord woman". How I wish it were possible to answer something like: "Don`t know, but I`ll tell you if I ever see one. Promise..."

I like my followers.
They do get in the way at times, or stick behind every once in a while but thats what we got saves for :)

And if they get knocked down briefly - hey, that means I havent been taking the punishment, so i fail to see how they are 'a waste'.

It really just depends on how you chose to play.

I have the difficulty on Master and set my level at 100 so the enemies are as hard as they could possibly get. I gave Muiri every spell worth giving an NPC, 1000 health, magicka, stamina, and carryweight, and all her skills are at level 100, and she can pretty much do everything for me. Again, this is how I chose to play but I disagree that followers are not useless. You simply have to know how to use them.

On PS3, Lydia was less useful thanks to not having the console, but she still came in handy as a packmule.

The only reason I use a follower is as a pack mule. I give them the best enchanted armour and the worst weapons, so they don't steal my kills. I then get them to pick up all the ebony greatswords and solid dwemer metal I come across.

The downside is you have to put up with their incessant moaning...
