Ideas for a TES movie script

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 11:27 pm

This thread is about brainstorming a potential template for a rough draft of a feature film based on the events in Skyrim. Hopefully it inspires people to start thinking about the possibilities of basing a movie in the land of Tamriel.

First of all, would you even want a Skyrim movie?

Well of course you do. Not because you want to see a bombastic summer blockbuster, but instead a lengthy fantasy film which really captures the look and feel of Skyrim. A film which does justice to its source material, but doesn't necessarily allow itself to be constrained by the canon. A movie with a focus on convincingly portraying the difficulties that these fictional characters are subjected to daily on the brutal continent of Tamriel.

Okay, so why should you care?

You should care because you want to see this IP be given the same amount of exposure as LOTR or Star Wars, to spread the joy of wrapping your mind around such a deeply rich and rewarding fantasy landscape.

So what should you do in this thread?

This thread is a freefire idea zone. Anything goes, possible casting for actors, locations the script should be set in, whether or not to include certain factions, etc. If you'd even like to go so far as sketching up a basic script, by all means, post it. Our goal is to get people thinking about this, so hopefully a higher up at either Bethesda or whatever movie company might stumble upon it, and be inspired themselves to make it happen.

Ladies and Gentlemen, let's get to it.

My little idea. Just a start.

If any movie for the TES series should be made, I think it would be optimally set immediately before the events of Skyrim, focusing on the exploits of Ulfric Stormcloak, with the penultimate scene being Ulfric getting captured and a collection of other "Unnamed Prisoners" getting loaded onto the wagon which the player starts Skyrim in. The climix of the movie would be Ulfric shouting the old high king to death, followed by the sounds of dragons coming from beyond the horizon.

Ideally, the wonderful actor Liam Neeson would make a perfect Ulfric, considering their near identical facial features. But that's just my thought on the matter.

Hmm. Good idea, although Gary Oldman I think would be better as Ulfric, as he is good with evil people, Neeson is too badass to be evil, he should be Tullius.

Well, uhm, I dont necesarily think Ulfric is evil. To really sell this particular tale as a full length film, it would have to cover both sides of the conflict, and provide multiple perspectives on the whole beginning of the civil war. Scenes with all of the Jarls yelling at eachother over a large stone table, looking at maps, talking with their advisers, etc.

Perhaps Ulfric could even have a love interest who gets killed, a la Braveheart? It would certainly be a very gory movie, with an aim for a solid R rating. Brutal fight scenes, maybe even a little bit of boob when things get steamy. Think Conan The Barbarian.

So may possibilities!

Skyrim The Movie should star Jason Mamoa as The Dragonborn hero and star of the movie after bulking up a little more.

Jason Mamoa would not be a bad choice for dragonborn, but I think since everyone's dragonborn is different, it would be unwise to make a movie focusing on the dragonborn. Perhaps he would show up like a superhero when the main characters are in dire need of assistance?

But seriously, I think each game did justice to its own unique story line, so a movie would ideally be set in the TES universe, rather than based directly off a TES game.

The number one rule for good stories, which 99% of video games ignore, is that story comes from character.

You have to somehow relate the Dragonborn story to character. Like the Sopranos is superficially about gangsters but really is about what it means to be human -- somehow you have to get the Dragonborn to represent the same thing.

So you have to set up a Dragonborn character that is somehow based in weakness and fear, like the Sopranos characters. Otherwise it is just a standard monomyth action story that is trying to monetize the gamer public into movie tickets and no-one else will give a crap about it. Oh yeah I am a big hero, someone screwed me over and now I will make him eat mud. Yawn.

Could anyone write that? Sounds super difficult to me. If you don't make it great on the level of the characters, you just have to hope that everyone who bought the game buys the movie, and that is cheap and nasty.

Sorry, it's just that I watched a brilliant Sopranos episode yesterday. :)

how about robert pattinson as dragonborn,

Get out.

And Mujokan, I agree entirely. Too many times does a story suffer because too much attention was paid to special effects, and not enough to actually creating a plausible and likable cast of characters.
