When did npcs get smart?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 6:24 pm

So i was in a dungeon and as i came up on this guy i started firing arrows at him, there was absolutely no way for him to get to me, so when i started fire arrows HE RAN FOR COVER... and he stood behind cover until i relocated and was able to hit him, soon as the first arrow hit him, he ran for a DIFFERENT set of cover, and this kept repeating until i got down there with my axe and finished him of.

well done beth, well done.

Too bad NPCs are dumb as hell most of the time though. Especially followers.

I noticed a mage literally running away once I got him down to low health I was actually surprised. I thought put it down to the PISE mod I used.

@ OP - Are you on PC?

I swear some NPCs are from the matrix, they dodge some of my arrows no matter what.

NPCs in Rage behaved the same way...perhaps there has been a bit of crossover in AI.

that was a much used exploit in oblivion - tough bad guy? Hop on a rock and pepper him with arrows. Fixed in Skyrim, they'll run for cover.

I noticed a load of setting in the CK for changing taking cover behavior, but I can't say that I've noticed it in game play, apart from the running away bit. Mostly if I use a bow it's from stealth, and they either die first shot or wander around trying to work out where I'm firing from.

I too appreciate the AI and this is something new to the series. Once my warrior character grew strong enough, a few soldiers fled upon sight of me and tried to jump me from around corridors.

About user Nahchachito is a prime example.of the miserable gamers who will put a company down no end if a game's lacking something they wanted, and if it's included they'll say "yeah and it better be". Zero appreciation. I can't tell you how poorly you represent the gaming community.

True, enemy archers often tend to be smart. Then again, some archers rush to a frontal attack, not even planning on switching to melee weapons.

Lately I have noticed some subtle changes in the game(I'm on the 360) like vampires occasionally using heavy armor(never happened beofre to me), enemies seeking cover.and melee characters playing very different(against you) depending on thier equipment and rank.

They always run for cover when I'm firing at them especially enemy archers they keep hiding knocking an arrow then popping out and firing at me.

Sometimes there pathing seems to get stuck so I wait until they rectify it so i don't ruin a good fight...

Iv use no mods as of yet but I'm impressed overallbwith there ai although enemy mages and archers seem to be smarter than the average melee which is fine imo.

Im going to say this, I have had the rare npc trying to use cover but not anything different recently

The single most annoying npc action for me though is when they are crawling away from you on the ground, pleading for their life, get up, run to the end of the cell, turn around and get some courage from nowhere to charge me again with almost no health

Happened to me too sometimes, idk but especially on high levels when I'm really powerful, enemies and NPCs try to flee and cover when their health decrease a lot after one hit

I've had NPCs runing for cover when they can't reach you since I started playing on 1.1.
Definitely better than in earlier games of the series.
Somethimes they also sidestep your arrows.

I found it a bit strange though that when you knock them down to their knees and they beg for mercy, they usually directly start attacking you once they are on their feet again. It would be more logical for them to run away, maybe throw down their weapons, at least try to recover before attacking you again.
