depends , on 100 block level i'd reccomend light armor for more stamina usage+faster regen times for Shield Charge.

Otherwise, i'd usually go with heavy.

Thats what i was for my first Character, i used heavy armor the entire time. It gives you more protection from sword and arrow attacks however it makes you a wee bit slower compared to Light Armor. Although i didn't even notice the difference in speed so i would pick Heavy Armor. The best types of armor in the game tend to be heavy. I went with Dragonbone armor most of the game. If you can also build up your armor with upgrades it increases the amount of protection.

I'd go with whatever you think looks better. You can hit the armor cap with either. You can get the weightless perk with either. Light armor gives you the increased stamina regen perk, which may give light armor the edge from a gameplay perspective.

I like light armor for a character that blocks. The light armor perk that regenerates your stamina 50% faster is great if you like to shield bash.As far as wich armor gives more protection, with smithing you can get just as much armor rating with light armor as with heavy.

Both armors weigh nothing with the right perks so thats not much to consider.Mostly I like light armor for the stamina regen but in the end that relly didn't matter that much.
So chose what you think looks better.

Light Armor for sure in my opinion. I don't know about everyone else, but I barely took any hits on any of my shield wielding chars. The extra stamina you get from light armor compliments sword & board chars perfectly. More stamina for blocks, shield bash and power attacks! Not to mention you can reach the armor cap with light armor late game anyway.
