More to the Caravan's...

I'm doing a play though as a Khajiit (oh yeah :P spelled right) and i'm a trader but also a sellsword, i'm currently with my brotheren in Whiterun waiting for them to do something... like set up camp.

So my wish and idea is that maybe they could have like 5 or so quest's in the caravan. it would be like a guild, you would get a home when they set up camp. you get a message when they are leaving. it could really be sweet.

Now i know what our thinking... What kinda quest could there be?
  • "Show your worth" (pun intended) you need to have a certain speak skill and have bartered a certain amount. Note Khajiit get it a bit easier, they don't have to have as high of a level or sell as much.
  • "unjust arrest" one of the members of the caravan have been arrested for stealing you can either bribe the guards or prove he did not do it.
  • *"Retrieve it" This would be a radiant quest, pretty much get a random amount of a random but common item, like blue mountain flowers or iron swords.
  • "Being attacked, Stop!" You have run into an ambush and your caravan has been taken hostage, you need to get word to the other caravans to get money to save your caravan.
  • ** "it must go on" your now the leader of your own caravan, you can set the destination to go to which ever city you have already been to.
* this is a radiant quest as stated
** This is also a radiant quest that begins when you talk to a certain member of the caravan, it brings up a map and you can pick the next city that your caravan will travel to. You can either travel with the caravan or you can go ahead of them or just show up when ever.

Now when you are the leader of your caravan then you can get paid daily. it could start at 500 coins a day, then as you stay in the same city, the amount of money drops till the point were it's at 50 coins a day. Traveling to a new city will reset the gold per day count back to 500.

Before you can begin collecting your gold you need to talk to the member that you began the journey with and tell them that this is the perfect spot. You can wait 1 hour for them to set up camp then every 24 you can collect an income of gold.

I'd really love to see this happen, the Caravans are pretty pointless right now, they don't really offer any thing as far as interest other then someone to sell stuff to.

what do you think?

I like it. Unless something pops up in the DLC, expect it to only exist in the realm of mods... a shame for me and the "letter-shape"

I've sometimes wished we could do more with the caravans as well, as one of the more fun activities for me in Fallout 2 was doing caravan escort missions for the NCR, since you never knew what (or who, as the case may be) you were going to run into or whether or not you were going to have to fight them. Unfortunately that's as far as interactions with the caravans got; it would have been nice to be able to set one of my own up, both in order to get rid of all the random crap I kept hauling out of interiors and as a way to get my hands on more of the rarer ammo types (which were only available once a month from only two vendors, and then only in small(ish) quantities).

One thing about your own caravan: it should be required to set up its initial stock and then keep it supplied. This could be handled either by setting up a container into which you could dump the loot from your latest dungeon-diving expedition or goods you traded for in the town's shops, or by having the daily pay be regulated by the items (and (where applicable) quality of items) present for sale. In the former case you get a flat pay rate while the latter is variable, and both have merits: the flat rate insures you get a steady income and won't get hosed by lack of trade, while the variable rate means that if you go out and risk your neck for valuable swag you can make a fortune in return, because you'll have items people will shell out for since they can't otherwise get them.

One possibility would be that you actually traveled in real-time with the caravan rather than having it just pop up at a given town, which would offer the opportunity to go off-road in search of rare finds. Since that means dealing with Draugr, or worse, you could then hire mercenary guards (which would, by extension, expand on the hireling system already present) to make sure you didn't get ventilated while poking around in some barrow or cave. A side benefit of this would mean you could trade in places other than the main towns, which would encourage exploration in order to find new customers. The caravan masters even mention that they go all over the place to trade, so there is precedent for it.
