Skyrim goes to the movies...

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:32 am

I recently saw a really well done Skyrim video on YouTube and was wondering:

Would Skyrim or any of TES games be any good as a film?
Please discuss.

All I want are honest opinions.

The Games themselves wouldn't make very good movies, they have rather simple stories (Actually, most games have)

But the books in those games (Like "A Dance in Fire) would make a wonderful movie.

Does TES hold a good material to make a movie?
Yes!
Will that movie actually be good?
Well, look at all other movies based on games and tell me what do you think.

If they make a movie base on the mainquests on the 5 main Elder Scrolls then sure.

I agree with Amauri, the games and their plots are not really suited for a movie.
A lot of the ingame lore however does make a good story if properly done as a movie.

Your milage may very tough, I'm not a big fan of game movies in general due to how I feel they usually butcher the original story...

The live action trailer was atrocious. It had the production values of a pormo.

I think the Great war between the Empire and the Altmeri would make a nice movie.

It is probably going to look like Michael Ende's film "The Neverending Story". Only not quite as cute, rather mature, but just full of fantasy. I'd watch it!

I think there should be an Elder Scrolls theme park. Like Disneyland, but all Elder Scrolls themed. There can be different "lands" in it, like Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and Morrowind with their own attractions, restaurants, rides, costumed characters, etc... :)

They wouldn't be able to do Khajiit justice.

Did'nt they already make TES movie... Lord of the Rings? ... I jest

anyways I look at it like that; a lord of the rings type of movie. And those movies were great. And that is what most people (who don't know what skyrim is, or much about it) would think the movie was similar to. It would be compared to LOTR for sure. But LOTR was best as a movie and not so much as a game.

I think that if they stick to the main point of TES, then it would make for a fantastic movie. But it would be hard to choose which guilds the main character goes through or interacts with, which plot would make the most sense to make a movie out of and so forth.

The live action trailer was legit, and I would have to disagree with the person who thought otherwise.

I feel like TES is popular enough that it would get a great producer behind it to make it the best it can be. As far as the plot, well that's the hardest part.

Or argonians. Heck could they get any character right?

They are pretty unique!

*looks at the other movies based on games*

Nope leave TES alone and let it stay in games..

Also since TES does not have a "cast" including the main protagonist (the PC) how will such work? have them be just a dark shadow everywhere?

A tes movie should never happen. Despite what we may wish, the best we would ever get would be a crappy, cheap-looking little brother to LOTR. TES doesn't have a good story, it succeeds because it has hundreds of little stories that combine to make the story in your head. Oblivion was the story of most Greek Epics - god goes crazy, mortal turns out to be quasi divine, does some quests and so on. Morrowind was great because it was more unique in its way. Arena was stereotypical videogame fair (find the missing pieces of the staff) and I never played DF. The only way that TES would work would be as an ongoing tv show like Hercules or the old Xena show. Each episode would deal with a quest while always looking towards the MQ.
If they were to go with a movie they would have to come up with a new story that would reference the games from time to time but would in the end be its own narrative. Similar to the novels I guess. And if it svcked (which I think it probably would) it would get dumped into the same bargain bin as all the other video game-movie movies.

I feel that the nature of most computer game settings and the kind of stories that flow from them really lends itself better to a TV series than a movie, since a TV series allows for proper development of the characters and the setting, especially for those viewers who aren't already familiar with them.

A TES tv series would be awesome too.

That totally made me think about an April Fools Prank that Jagex did on the RuneScape site. Would be funny if Bethesda does a prank like that because would be funny to see how their Elder Scrolls theme park would be like.
