The things I can craft...

Where did the recipes come from for the things I can craft? Do you get some recipes just for having started a game? How do you get new recipes?

You can buy some crafting recipes from the Apothecaries or find them in a few bandit strongholds. Otherwise, just experiment.

What about blacksmithing and tanning recipies. I did those for the first time and there are a number of things I can craft from leather and leather straps (tanning) to boots, armor, and head pieces (blacksmithing). Also notice I have recipes for crafting some jewelry.

Do you just start the game with those recipes and then find/learn new ones later?

Spoiler
the companions quest line gives you the ability to make nord hero weapons and armor but it is the only quest line that i know of that gives you the ability to craft something special like that

Spoiler
there is the atronach forge under the college of winterhold that lets you make things like deadric gear and deadric atronachs out of items like void salts deadric hearts and sigil stones, but i dont know anything but how to make a fire atronach, you just gotta experiment with it

Smithing is the only crafting skill where you automatically know how to make everything for whatever level you have unlocked.

It's 'effing stupid.

Enchanting is also a crafting skill. You don't get those "recipes" any way but disenchanting things.

I agree completely. There needs to be recipes for smithing. It's stupid that you just automatically know how to make everything.

Ok so if I understand you correctly, I 'unlock' smithing recipes I can craft based on perks that I get? That is an odd approach. After years of playing WoW just got very used to the idea of finding/buying a recipe, learning the recipe, then crafting it.

Enchanting and Alchemy I undersand. With Alchemy you just mix ingredients and discover what you can make. With enchanting you disenchant an enchanted item and learn how to recreate its effects.

I just didn't understand why or how I had the recipes I had when it came to smithing and tanning. But now I understand that you get recipes for those two crafting abilities by unlocking perks in the smithing tree.
