HUGE error. Can no longer play Skyrim (360)

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 2:56 pm

I've been playing Skyrim for months now without problem, but today I find I can't load a saved game OR start a new game - all I can select is 'Credits'.

At first I thought I'd selected the wrong memory device, but after going back to the Xbox home page and loading again (because there's no other way of re-selecting, stupid oversight there) I found the all options were greyed out apart from 'Credits'. The last time I played, I did choose to view the credits for the first time and then changed games or switched my console off part way through. As I'm typing this, the credits are still rolling, **perhaps**, and this is what I'm hoping for, it'll let me play the game once I've got to the end of the credits. If this is the case then I'll respond with an update, but even if that is the case, this is a serious bug and don't even get me started on the possibility of it being deliberate.

For anyone wondering why I might be typing this now rather than sitting through the credits and responding after - it's because I'm pissed off that it won't start and want to vent. For what it's worth, I just bought a CD player that doesn't [censored] work either - so I was in a bad enough mood as it was.

I'll keep an eye on this and inform Bethesda either way.

Nope. Credits have just finished and I still can't select anything other than credits. I've had no problem playing before or after the recent update.

Can't find any reports of this happening at all. I have the game installed to my HDD; I'm going to uninstall it now and see if anything changes.

I was going to suggest that. I really hope you don't have to completely delete your saves as well. I would also clear the cache. Can't hurt. Hope it works.

The problem with only being able to select 'credits' is that you can't even select 'new game' (I think). I'm not so sure if it's a save issue.

Thanks for the responses.

Uninstalled the game from my disc, managing not to completely delete any gamesaves as I almost did, nope - still won't work.

I'm not using the cloud service, no. The thing is, it won't even let me play a new game on any storage device - everything's greyed out no matter what.

I've filled out an e-mail form and sent it across to Bethesda, I hope it sent because they seem to have forgot to add a 'Your message has been sent' confirmation - it just loaded the 'home' page of the site again. What worries me most is that it doesn't seem to be disc related as the console would barely use it with it being installed, as for console problems - well that's a heftier problem to fix. I haven't modded my console at all, only bought and installed an external HDD (official and everything, works without problems), so why it would do this is beyond me.

I must also add that I was wrong about quitting during the credits last time round - that was a previous time, and I played the game after backing out of the credits (because I never return to the title screen, only begin there) so that somewhat logical explanation doesn't work either.

Now to wait for Bethsda, who are probably bogged down with hundreds of e-mails about trivial stuff.

Thanks again for the concern and feedback.

I think I've found the solution! Apologies if this is it...I've just realised that the controller's anologue stick is stuck constantly going up. I've restarted (having to switch on my wireless controller) multiple times, but it's doing it still. I can only move using the D-Pad and it's not making any menus move at all - it's like it's been disabled because it's malfunctioning. I booted up Morrowind and saw that it was flickering vertically through all the options.

This seems like a winner. Now to fish out my alternative controller and...

You might have better luck in the software/hardware x360 board. Maybe someone's seen this issue before.

I'm probably reaching here, but have you tried clearing the game cache? Hold left bumper, right bumper and x when you boot the game

He has already realised his problem~ *aka his controller*

Try pulling the stick out, or bashing it in, nothing to lose right? I had the same problem in the past and doing both seemed to solve the issue =)

Aaaaah, that was it.

Now before you call me a doofus (because I don't know if I could take being called *that*), it wasn't affecting the Xbox home menus at all! I'm not sure how I didn't notice this, apart from that I'm old school and apparently use the D-pad and not the anologue for menus - news to me. Also, as said, the controller has been switched on and off during this fiasco and from my experience that's always reset any calibration issues like that.

Well I don't know why my controller's gone mad, but that's another problem for tomorrow, if you'll excuse me...somebody gonn' get FUS'D!

Thanks for your help and interest, really cool of you guys. Cheers!

No red ring of death? It kinda sounds like a corrupt file man. Don't want to scare ya but I wants to warn ya. I had what sounds like the same thing happen with Oblivion on my 360 elite and it totally fried it. I had to buy a new 360 and start over, it svcked some major a$$ man!! You should try the xbox hmoe page the help section is alright and you can fire off an e-mail to them to and get their input.I'd also fire off the e-mail to Beth. again just to make sure it did go through and be patient. Give us an update if and when you can.

No worries. Believe me, I know how frustrating that kind of problem can be. And you start an almost panic that you may lose your game, plus the anger starts to set in. Very easy to overlook more obvious problems. Hell, none of us thought it was the controller till you mentioned it. I'm glad it was a simple fix. :)

And you know what? I'm not pissed off about my CD player not working now, which just arrived from eBay today (and will obviously need replacing).

Wow. I'm no believer, but it truly does seem as if when God closes a door he opens up a window. He then closes that window on your hand and says "Forgotten about the door, haven't you?".
