Followers killing civvies... [PS3]

[PS3]

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about keeping your followers in line... Here's my most common problem:

I'm pretty into in-game thievery, but run into this pretty annoying complication... My follower (Illia) is not against crime, so that's not it. However, whenever I pickpocket an NPC and get caught she kills them. Now, legally it's not a problem for me as I don't actually get blamed for the murder (just have to pay pickpocket bounty), but it's a real pain! Even when I tell her to wait somewhere as soon as the person I'm pickpocketing turns hostile she rushes to my aid and wastes them.

Most recently she killed Belethor (general goods in Whiterun) and with the limited shopkeeper gold/economy I have to say it's a real bummer.

I'm sure others have run into this, but I was hoping someone might have ideas on how to avoid this? -- Obviously aside from not getting caught pickpocketing XD

Thanks!

Make them wait outside the cell.

Normally I'd say release the follower and just re-sign them when you are done with the thieving tasks / questline. However, you ARE stuck if ILLIA is your main companion, err... follower. Release her and you never get her back, she's still glitched after 4 patches. It's possible to leave her on wait mode outside the cell, but it can be a pain if you need the carrying capacity, or extra horse power if a fight evolves.Plus on occasion it can mean quite a bit of backtracking. To be honest I don't think theft was ever realy intended to be follower type of play style. Otherwise they'd have a pickpocket command....

Well, if you're a thief-style character, you generally do not want to have followers with you. They're a bane to you in all aspects, especially getting you caught. This is why a thief usually travels alone. Having followers is more for mage and warrior type characters.

Actually, having followers is more for people who want a royal pain in the ass. They are so totally useless, that most don't even work as cannon fodder.

/sigh

i know it's not best to have a follower when i'm running my thief stuff, but that's not the only path i follow quest-wise -- and sometimes it is nice to have a follower in those cases. lydia does indeed svck, but illia is awesome! and i know of her glitch too which is why it's even more frustrating!

anyway, thanks for the replies. turns out i lost illia to another glitch last night (started companions quest-line and she disappeared when farkas joins the party)... so, i'm not suffering from my original problem anymore.

i do miss her though :(
