To restart or not. That is the question.

golf-

i've tried playing with no hud and periodically checking my health in such a manner.

very cumbersome, inefficient and frustrating. though, doable.

Couple of things. First of all, turn off the Autosaves, all of them. Use manual save slots so the game will not over write your content. Get in the habit of saving before you go somewhere or to a new cell. Save in the middle of a cell. Never save just after you enter a cell. Keep a save point from before you start a quest, one for during it, and one at major stages. This way if the quest borks, then you can go back.

Now, to have multiple characters active, either have a PS3 profile for each one or do this:

Yup, thanks CCNA - the separate profile on the ps3 did the trick and gave me a little leeway to try some new things without jeopardizing my past saves.

I have to get in the habit of saving more often. I rely too much on autosaves and it certainly does seem to mess up the ps3 save file system, so that's an adjustment for me to make in the future.

The sum total of all of this, and again, thanks to all for the help, I tried out a playstyle last night that I'd never really given thought to, and didn't think I'd enjoy. And loved it! So, it looks like I'm going to try out a new character anyway... but that is another story... for another thread..

I tend to have two major characters types (out of multiple characters) good and bad. Good ones help people, bad ones steal and kill. Now, in these games, Thieves are not typically murderers, but it is still a crime. Some will even roll a thief and roll an assassin.

There is no reason not to have multiple characters, rolled for each play style you want to do. In fact, the game is better with a character that is built for certain things to do those certain things. My current Paladin is not a Thief, will not steal and will not kill for money, only defense or principal. I can never take him through the Thieves, DB or even most of the Daedric Quests.

^^^^ This.

I tend to try and build characters that can take on 2-3 roles for instance

For skyrim I have 3 main characters

A Breton Shadow Mage - College and Thieves Guild - lvl 40
A Nord Barbarian - Companions, Stormcloaks and Main Quest (Just feels right to play a Nord in the main quest and Stormcloaks) - lvl 37
A Imperial Archer - Imperials and Dark Brotherhood. - Not started yet

My 5-10 hour characters will just be general mixes who wander and explore.

I'm having an issue like that, sort of..

I rolled an Elf Archer, bad ass archer.. But I'm really fond of the dual wielding orcs going berserk, but I won't restart for the benefit of another toon, I just like my archer too much. But, even though I'm an archer, I tend to train my melee abilities just in case I wan't to whoop some ... with swords etc.. But really, that doesn't add up with my character being an arching, sneaking, clever elf, now does it?

clever elf

J'rahzir is most amused by such a term. The Orc are also Elf kind, though J'rahzir wonders if this has always been. A true warrior is a warrior who can fight any battles without being hindered. J'rahzir's father told him this, and J'rahzir believes his father to be a wise Khajiit. Sometimes, it is wise to stab a foe in the back. Others, it is best to cleave the foes belly apart. But usually, it seems best to destroy an enemy from a great length. Perhaps an Orc would better serve one as an Elf than any other form of Elf, yes?

This one thinks the truly clever elf would keep his sword for when he is not the bad ass archer he thinks he is.

Ok, it's another restart thread.

I'm an emotional player. I play RPGs for the immersion, and not for min/maxing the best and the baddest. But I feel I make the mistake of getting too carried away with the type of character I play, even if it has little to no bearing on the game itself.

Case in point - my current char - Medani, Imperial thief/assassin - or at least that's how I see him, he's yet to get to teh guilds, mostly tooling around Riverwood/Whiterun at the moment... ready to head to Riften...

But here's the problem - I tend to be a "good guy" player. I do the quests, I get Ysolde her mammoth tusk, I get Amren his sword back... stuff like that. Haven't gone too far on the MQ yet, but I intend on doing it... it's my first real playthrough. I'm not saying I need to be the bad guy, but the whole thief/assassin thing, and then helping out a merchant with her quest to be the best ever merchant just gives me some congnitive dissonance, that's all. But at the same time, I killed those travellers headed to their friends wedding. Not sure if cognitive dissonance is the right term, but it makes me question the character.. so there it is.

So... what to do? Restart? Play a Nord Warrior, hero of Skyrim? I guess to add to the dilemma, I work, I've got a family, if I get about 6 hours of gaming time a week, that's pretty good. My char right now is level 15 and I just don't know if I can handle going through the intro, Embershard, Bleak Falls and all the intro stuff again. I've probably restarted at least 5 or 6 times... and coincidentally, it's usually around level 15 or so that I start to get... antsy.

So, what do the experts think? Restart? Or get my butt to Riften asap?!
well in your case i'd just go to Riften and pretend that your character's "good will" towards men has been expired. These are the best type of bad guys anyway. The ones that were morally good then get enraged at the lack of morallity shown by the rest of the world then feel like its there duty to be god's insterment of wrath. Thereby inflicting chaos and havik upon the chaff so of speak. I'd go that route since you only have hours a week to play and by the time you get to this point with another character it'll be another month. If your like me that can play 10 hours a day i think you'd know what i'd do lol.

At the Elf type. If one is an Elf, J'rahzir welcomes whole-heartedly that one is offended. *wide grin*

:-)

I had my doubts when I created my first toon, tho. All of them seemed awesome in their own unique style with their own unique story line etc.
But I really, really wanted to make a specialized archer, which I thought would be best suited to an Elf :)
But at some level, I'd like the archer to become melee skilled and so, but I'm not certain whether that would be a complete misfit or what ever.. :)

J'rahzir said once before that the Orc is Elf. Elf isn't always Orc, however. The Orc is the brutal Elf. The Dunmer is the angry Elf. The Altmer is the flamboyant Elf. The Bosmer is the small annoying Elf. More monkey than Elf, but Elf nonetheless.

just pretend your character made a bad choice, even good people make bad choices, or they can change after a while

But when I read the story of my wood elf and what racial abilities the race grants, it clearly states that the wood elf is the finest archer of all Tamriel? But is that just lore conjectured, or is it evident in game? Like +5% bow dmg. or something?

Their skills with the bow is impressive, even this Khajiit shall admit this. They do not have the will to make a bow more aggressive, they simply know how to wield such a weapon better than others. J'rahzir can be just as good with the bow if given enough time.

Okay :)

But to simplify this to me.. Do wood elfs have a buff arching wise, or is it just lore? I don't know, if you're answered this explicitly, which is why I'm asking for clarity :)

I think it's just the beginning stats. They're +5 or +10 with a bow (something like that). So all it really means is that you get a headstart on archery. But if your character begins with a low archery, say 15, it's okay. Join the Companions, make a little money and have Aela train you 10 times over two levels. In essence, that's the only difference: two levels worth of training--at most.

It's good in some ways, a little deflating in others. It's good in that if you get to level 30 and are getting bored with magic-using, you can switch up and begin training in archery, thievery, etc. And with enough amount of time, you can become deadly efficient in your newly chosen skills. But it's kind of a drag in that in the end, there really are no advantages or disadvantages to any race. The differences are completely superficial.

But if each race had very strict parameters and limitations people would complain about the lack of freedom in the game. As it stands now there's people who complain about there being too much freedom in the game. Take your pick.

As to the OP. All my characters are selfish pragmatists. If it furthers the bank account, that's what they do until money becomes a non-issue. Then they do whatever strikes them as interesting. I suspect that's a semi-tragic metaphor for life.

Thanks, Bacillus

Yeah, I tend to do the same. I mean, I don't stay to a strict line carried forth for my exact character. I do what I find amusing, although, perk-wise I'm fond of adding points to the talent trees fitting the play style of my elf

i restarted, so i didnt miss the quests i did, while completing the main quest quickly.

and i'm kind of at a crossroad. i grew bored of the caves, dwemer ruins, during my first go around, now i really don't feel like running around from cave to cave, to do quests, again.

much more action should happen in the cities and around the cities and on the land. But that's just my opinion

I'm asking for clarity

Curses, Creature, J'rahzir speaks as clear as crystal in the midday sun. What is so hard to understand with the tongue of this Khajiit? Perhaps there is a thick accent within the voice... *clears throat*

Howdy, y'all! This here be J'rahzir! He be tellin' ya bout dem damn dirty creatures called Bosmer! Dem bastards can't make an arrow fly any faster, but them sure can shoot an arrow an put it right where it be needin to be! Yippy yippy skippy! Yeehaw!

*sly smirk* This is better, yes?

I open up the skills and it displays my health.

I tried that for a while and I soon realized I was bad at guessing how much health I had because I was always opening it to check thinking it was about time to heal only to find I was at full health. Then I would get killed because I thought I was at full health when I was not. I spent so much time in the skills menu that I eventually turned the darned HUD back on. Really wish you could turn off the compass adn sneak crosshair without loosing the health bar.

turija-

i went throught the same thing, at first, but, now i just use the blood and hazy screen to cause an insta-press reflex. though, the reflex took some time to develop.

you can put health potions into your favorites and just work on the timing when the blood/haziness begins to appear.

i'm going to run a full, no hud DID playthrough using a printed map and strict roleplay with no music.
