Constructive suggestions to Skyrim DLC or The Elder Scrolls

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:02 am

I see a lot of whining and criticism on this forum. When you see how hard people worked on Skyrim in the making of, you should realise that it's easy to nitpick on everything when you were not involved yourself.

So I've decided to start a topic with suggestions from the fans that are actually interesting for the creators, not just another one starting a brand new topic on a tiny aspect that does not function or that they think is rediculous...

Here are my suggestions:
  • Sometimes, I'd like more information in the quest journal, especially the miscellaneous ones that I started a while ago...
  • It would be nice to have different kinds of horses per hold. (variation in price, characteristics, etc.)
  • It would be nice to have a horse or dog that cannot die unless you accidentally shoot it, like the other followers. One of the reasons I don't like to take dogs or horses along is because they die so easily and then I have to reload over and over again if I want it back.
  • It would be great that once you buy Vigilance in Markarth, that you're not obliged to take it along and that it just returns to your home like a follower. Now it returns to Markarth and I have to pay for it again if I want it back... And I like his barking so much when I return to my home in Solitude.
  • It would be great if you could decide to stop a quest line.
  • It would be great if you could store quest items. After all you can always decide not to end the quest and to sell the quest item, especially if you have so many that it affects your carry weight...
  • It would be nice if you were able to take more followers along. Bringing followers has downsides but at least you have the option then. (But I believe that's been taken care of in a mod. Too bad I play on X-Box)
  • Which brings me to: mods on XBox Live! :-)
  • It's great that you can marry in Skyrim. It would be great to adopt or have children too.
  • I see a lot of eight to twelve-year-old kids. It would be nice to have some babies and toddlers too, for credibility's sake.
  • It would be nice if you could select the follower's equipped items. Now some follower's logic conserning equipping items is weird, picking a gold diamond necklace over a Amulet of Kynareth, e.g.
  • It would be great if you could use a boat like a carriage or use a deserted row boat along the riverside.
  • It would be awsome if you could buy your own boat.
  • It would be nice if you were able to take your horse within the city walls.
  • Wouldn't it be great to have a pet shop where you can buy different kinds of dogs and other pets like a bird in a cage...
  • It would be great if there was some decoration store where you could buy extra decorations, like small cupboards or chairs.
  • It would be nice if when you emptied the shelves in your house that you could use them as book storage in stead...
  • It would be nice if you had the option "fully decorate house" so that if you have enough money, that you don't have to talk to the steward over and over again...
  • It would be great if there was a house that had a chest right next to the alchemy table and the arcane enchanter.
  • It would be awsome if you could buy cottages as well or a house in a small village or a cabin in the woods.
I hope this will inspire other to more ideas.....

These are all great suggestions. I've often thought about the same things. They also seem very doable (except for the mods on Xbox, not sure how'll they do that).

It would also be nice if the reputation system would be more progressive. So for example, guards would treat you with more and more respect or distrust based on what you have done.

It would also be cool to have more of a tangible end result to the civil war and people would comment more on it during the game, saying things like "now that the war is over, I'm not afraid to travel to Windhelm anymore" or stuff like that.

I would like less (preferably no) conversations where you can only choose one dialogue option. That kind of defeats the purpose of conversations in my opinion. The conversations are a major part of the rolepalying aspect in my opinion. So even if the quest demands a certain answer from the player character, they could have several ways of phrasing basically the same answer, just for roleplaying's sake, like:
1. "I will gladly help you"
2. "Very well then, if you insist..."
3. "As long as I get paid, I'll do your dirty work"
4. "By the Divines, it is my solemn duty to help those in need!"

Or something like that:)

Quest items doesn't weight anything.
Try going to an empty container, drop off every single item you have on you, even if it says it doesn't weigh anything; drop it all.
The quest items will remain in your inventory, what is your weight? It's 0.

So you're saying that if you have 23 stones of Barenziah, they weigh nothing? Strange.
I'll definetely try and check it. Thanks anyway.
But with my first character, I really had the impression that I was unable to carry a lot because of all these bugged quest items. With my new character it seems like I have a lot more carry weight. Could be my race too of course... Anyway, I'd be so glad to get rid of these briar hearts in the game, as now I cannot use them for alchemy, ever.

I only have a few

1. Have the world change depending on what you do. For example... it's hard to say without mentioning spoilers. Suffice it to say that killing certain people should carry more of a penalty than a fine. A player should be banned from a city under such circumstances until they do a series of quests to make up for it.

2. The marriage "quest" is very empty. I don't want a SIMS game but all it amounts to is having an NPC in your house that gives you some money.

3. Maintenance of guilds. Once you become top dog of any guild you don't have to do anything to maintain your position.

4. Recognition by NPCs. For example, if my character has become the Archmage of the College and is actually wearing the AM robes, the wizard in Dragonsreach shouldn't tell me that I should apply to the mage's college--if I think I have the aptitude for it.

5. Destruction Magic. Seriously underpowered. The difference between having your DM at 65 and two handed, one handed, archery, etc. at 65 is dramatic. This may be the result of playing at only Master level and opponents having lots of health though.

Other than those, the game is amazing. I could think of some other minor things but I'd just be nitpicking. I also keep in mind that technology and funding aren't unlimited so you can't put everything imaginable into any game.

That's right!
Now nothing really changes. Sometimes guards say "What is it Elf?" or "Stay out of trouble Khajiit" right after they said that you saved Skyrim from a great evil and that they'll never forget it. That's weird. :-)

Or I put some pressure on an argonian in Riften to make his girlfriend pay her debt. He's been angry with me ever since. When I gave him the stones to construct his wedding ring he was really grateful for a few seconds, before he started telling me again that I had a lot of guts showing my face there again...

But I bet making the world and the reactions of NPC's feel like more real is not that simple... They already did a great job trying. It is after all an open world game.

He's right. I don't know if you've gotten the Elder Scroll yet, but look at your carry weight before you get it and then after you get it. In your inventory it says the thing weighs 15 (or 20) but your carry weight does't increase.

The bug with not being able to drop certain items from certain quests is annoying but their actual effects in terms of carry weight are nil.

Great suggestions! I agree.
I did the Companions Quest after I saved Skyrim from Alduin and after I became Arch Mage. Yet, the kept referring to me as a stranger they had never heard of. I should think that being dragonborn and having defeated Alduin would increase your odds in becoming a member of "any guilt".

Also, when I did that Temple Quest where you had to use Nettlebane to save the tree in Whiterun, I chose to plant a new tree. I expected there to be a tiny but healthy tree in stead of the big one from then on. It would have been nice if the visual result was different according to your choice in that quest.
But as I said before, these are minor things that don't really bother you if you compare it to all the awesome things in Skyrim... :-)

Some of the suggestions in the OP are nice, some are silly, some are merely cosmetic, and some are personal preference. I don't want the OP to feel like I'm attacking, so I'm not going to go line by line.

What I can't believe wasn't mentioned, though, is this: If you're going to let me ride a damn horse, let me actually FIGHT from the thing. Until that happens, horses are like shovels - useless.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. But wasn't there a mod that focused on that issue? I'd much rather fight from my horse too in stead of getting off and on all the time. Red Dead Redemption really succeeds at this!
But horses do die too easily. One tiny frostbite spider and a second away from your horse is enough to have it killed.

I realise some of the suggestions might sound a bit girly or sims-like. (I actually never played the Sims) But to me, all modifications that make the world more real to me are welcome, even if to some they sound a bit silly. I don't play Skyrim just to decorate my home and have children (I really love a good encounter), I just love the fact that it's all there and should these extra life-like activities (like marriage) ever get more credible, then I can only be very enthousiastic about that. :-)

Anyway,I think the game cannot possible reckon with all suggestions and preferences. There are so many different players that it is impossible to satisfy every single one of them 100%. So I'm happy to know that this game is the most satisfying ever to me, even without the mods, DLC and other possible extra's.

Speaking of shovels, when I started playing I expected they could be used to dig up treasure. Wouldn't that be nice?
Who hides a treasure chest just by putting it there where it's visible for everyone?
