I feel like this game makes you fast travel

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:35 am

Especially in the DB questline.
Spoiler
Kill him across the whole province, then come back, then go to another town acrossf the entire place, then come back.
and so on and so on

I have noticed that not fast traveling does give you some random events, but I feel like it's just not worth it

EDIT: I forgot to say that I'm an average gamer. I play when I'm bored, if I don't have any school work, if no parties or friends are doing anything. I realize that A LOT of you actually play this game for a long amount of time for several days. Considering some of you already have like 20 or 30 decent characters. And I mean that in an all respectful way of course, I'm not one to judge one's lifestyle.

But I don't play this game every day of my life, nor do I play it for 5 hours when I'm able to play it. I don't want to have a night where I feel like playing this game but end up getting 2 missions that require a walk from Riften to Solitude or Windhelm to Markarth...I mean, there goes my night that was dedicated solely to walking around skyrim. Don't get me wrong, exploring every once in a while is great, but to do it for an excesive amount of time when trying to complete a desired mission is just overkill

The true experience of Elder scrolls is the journey, not the destination.

What you feel is not always what the reality is.

Bethesda designed the game in such a way that you MUST have discipline and strength of will to resist all the hand-holding such as Fast-Travel. No one needs it, they just think they do (bad, bethesda. bad you do this just out of greed).

I'm an advocate of not using fast travel, but I couldn't disagree more. Skyrim was clearly designed with fast travel in mind. I don't know but I'd think Oblivion wasn't.

The only difference from Oblivion and Skyrim as I can remember fast travel wise is that in Oblivion you had to discover a location before going there first. In Skyrim a Carriage can take you to the biggest cities holds. Other then that fast travel worked exactly the same. Fast travel also existed in Morrowind, but there it was called "Mark" and "Recall" and was spells that did the same thing as fast trav el except only to the place you had marked.

Skyrim gives you the possibility to use fast travel, just like Oblivion did. You don't need to do it, you could walk as the experience of running from Anvil to Leyawiin is pretty much as running from Riften to Markarth. Once you have done it X amount of times you simply find it boring and fast travel instead. I don't feel any game was designed more then the other with fast travel in mind, but it is there as an option for those who want to use it.

I do not get that much time to play, but I do not use fast travel much anymore (I only use it when I am looting the goodies at the end of a quest and I need to make several trips to move it all)

The other thing that I do is as I have got the mod Dovahkiin's hideout, I use that to travel between my houses from time to time (especially if I do not have much time)

I also use fast travel when I lose my husband en route. I do that to fast travel to the location where I am already at (it is just a nice way to get him back without waiting)

I'm not talking about the functionality of fast travel, I'm talking about how the questlines flow and feel in the world. It's subjective but in Oblivion I felt rewarded for not using fast travel. If I was asked to go some great distance the quests would either acknowledge that effort either through the dialogue(NPCs noting the journey) or by the quality of the quest(something epic enough to justify the distance). In Skyrim I'm constantly questioning the purpose of even being sent. Cloud Ruler Temple-High Hrothgar-Cloud Ruler Temple-High Hrothgar for pretty mundane purposes, and with the NPCs acting like it was just a run around the corner.

Play however you like. I never fast travel and my son does extensively. He's way ahead of me on most questlines but on the other hand is constantly wanting to know where the neat thing I disovered that he missed or how I got some quest he missed entirely because of fast travel. You will miss lots of relatively slow paced travel time ( which those of us immersed in the world love but to each his own) but you will also miss some interesting things and a few fun but mostly minor questlines.

I've already made it clear I don't fast travel so I don't know why you keep speaking like I do.

For me, yes, i agreed.

1. Horse is slow, not fast enough to be a main transportation on Skyrim
2. Played it on master, 5 from 6 of my journey with horse, 100% horse death because of dragon attack

so, if you dont want to fast travel, use shadowmere or get ready to loose 1000 gold

3. Sooner or later you must go arround the mountain to your destination, and it very frustating

4. My record, on my 50 LV nord, walk from Falkreath to Solitude, i met 7 Dragons

bottom line, it's your choice

Having to fulfill DB contracts from across the country makes a lot of sense in my book. If you were plotting to kill someone, would you do it anywhere nearby? It would be extremely risky, as the target could overhear you, a witness could recognize you, etc. That's how I would do it, personally.

And I don't understand. If you like the world and want to see it as much as possible (by not fast travelling), why are you complaining that you will have to spend time out in the world by not fast travelling? o.o

I personally don't see how carriages are any different than fast traveling. To me, carriages are just fast traveling with a gold sink attached.

heh ye i dont fast travel, or use horses, i just walk, but i also agree that the carriage system is just fast travel.

the carriage system would have been good if there was no fast travel option.

but ye each to their own. ive had more fun just exporing in this game than doing the quests.

Nah in Oblivion you needed to Fast Travel, since it takes FOREVER to get anywhere on foot.

In Skyrim, coupled with low CTD rate, you don't *need* to fast travel at all.

I think I've discovered and been through every single location on the map, I'm pretty sure of this. I wonder if people who use fast travel, of how many random encounters they miss and how many locations they will never discover because they don't bother exploring.

This just in, you can Fast Travel and still explore! News at 11.

Seriously, you have to have sadomasochistic tendencies if you enjoy walking EVERYWHERE for EVERYTHING. Yes walking up to the Throat of the World or High Hrothgar or Solitude to Riften is highly enjoyable! -sarcasm

It's all about how you want to play it.
I often use the carriages when I don't feel like walking. It doesn't break the immersion too much and it has it's limitations. I like that.

I don't see what the problem is. Fast Travel is in the game for people like you; if you think it's too far to walk then just bring up the map, click and teleport there. Problem solved.

That's because of the pretty [censored] quest setup. You go to one side of the map, pick up a quest and then it's on the other side of the map. Makes no sense. If you ask any RPG player, they'll tell you they prefer to stay in one area until that area is cleared of quests and whatever else. I understand Bethesda trying to encourage traveling, exploring etc. but this is so not the way to do it. At all. Coupled with the fact that exploring will break a numeruous amount of quests, it makes it even harder to figure out why they made cross map quests.

Baffles the mind.

No, no it doesn't baffle the mind.

If you have a quest that sends you across the world, you don't have to fast-travel. That's a way of thinking that only applies to RPGs built around a leveling-city system (i.e. start in this city, do all the quests, then move to the next level of city, do all the quests, etc.). If you play any Elder Scrolls game like that, you'll get really frustrated.

And does no one remember Morrowind? I remember quests that took in-game weeks to complete because you pretty much had to walk around the entire map. This has now been a feature of the Elder Scrolls series for over a decade. It should not come as a surprise.

Download a mod that removes fast travel, you may enjoy it a lot more if the incentive isn't there .

You haven't heard about the new mod that's sweeping the nation?

It fixes all your problems with fast-travel, and it even gets you a better body, a sharper mind and a cleaner smile.

It's called Willpower.

The thing with fast travel is it was designed to help the newer players to the elder scroll series to get around. It was designed so that if you were low level and had barely any good weapons then it is good to avoid danger right? after that you can freely explore as you go.

What im saying is that fast travel is a boost for newer players to help them avoid danger before they can take it on.

Another thing that was designed to help new players was the quest compass. You could choose to use it or not as well.

Now we don't have quest directions. Good thing they can't remove walking. I think.

You can't fast travel around enemies . . .even that mudcrap piddling around at the edge of the river 50 feet away.

If a teleportation spell allows you to move from point A to point B, it's no different than fast travel.
It's a restricted form of fast travel, as it is in Oblivion and Skyrim the only thing that stops you from going anywhere is an enemy. I also mentioned a few other things besides the teleportation method.

I like to walk/run to my destinations in TESV. It helps build my skills/level from all the enemies I run into. Plus, I get to discover new locations along the way and see all the sites. Although I am kinda getting bored from the scerery. Snowy tundra doesn't excite me too much. I only use fast travel if I don't feel like walking. It doesn't bother me.

Funny, I always thought it was developed for Oblivion after there were very popular mods for "multiple mark and recall spells" in Morrowind. Maybe there is some truth in what you're saying, but don't forget that there was a call for this kind of thing from experienced users of MW as well.

(That didn't stop there being a huge outcry about it when OB came out, but then the ES community was never a harmonious bunch.)

Nope were not, and well take any opportunity to complain about something. Thats part of why TES is so great, many many many different kinds of people and theres something for all of us.

...But the OP problem has never really been fast traveling, even though there are many with a Silt Strider fetish, its been the quest markers that came with the fast travel(because Silt Striders and boats are still fast travel).

There are countless threads on fast travel and where there is smoke ...

Something is wrong with fast travel and Bethesda will want to do something about it eventually.

There aren't "countless" threads. There's a handful a week.

And since each of the threads inevitably involves one or two people complaining about fast travel, and 30-40 people saying that it's fine as is. And, as always, as it has been written so shall it be written again and so shall the words be spread across the globe like wildfire:

If you don't like fast travel, then don't use it.
