You could roleplay as a mage who has had bad experiences with necromancers in the past - witnessed them do some horrible things to innocents - or even someone who is an ex-necromancer seeking repentance. You can specialise in the Restoration turn undead spells and in Draugr dungeons wield an enchanted silver sword named "Galerion". Then one day you are bitten by a vampire that you are just about to slay and you find yourself turning into one of the undead yourself. You are racked with self-disgust and confusion, but you begin to notice your powers exponentially grow as your deeper understanding of fighting undead (ahem Necromage perk) allows you to tap deep into the dark magicks. And then you have a choice to make - either come back to the light and relinquish your newfound powers, or embrace them and make pacts with daedra etc and become a shadow of your former self (quite literally).

OR

You are an aged high elf and aldmeri dissident who was a young lad during the days of the oblivion crisis. You saw the thalmor rise to power and have always been sceptical of their motives. When you spoke out, you had assassins sent after you, and you were forced to flee your home on sumerset isle. You fled to cyrodil, attempted to warn the empire in vain. When the great war came you joined the legion and used your magickal prowess to fight the thalmor, your brethren. However when the empire signed the peace treaty and affiliated themselves with the thalmor, you had a bounty put on your head and were forced to flee even further north to skyrim, where you were caught and were about to be executed but luckily escaped. Now you are sympathetic to the stormcloak cause, yet find them unwilling to trust you because you are a high elf. You feel you could aid them greatly in their battle because of their complete lack of appreciation or knowledge of magic, but first must prove yourself to them.

OR

You are a friend of calcemo, trying to uncover the mysteries of the dwemer and the snow elves. You delve deep into dangerous dungeons to uncover artifacts and rebuild the knowledge base on these lost races.

OR

You have heard tales of the ancient magic possessed by the undead dragon priests. You are fascinated by nordic history and know that there is very deep magic at work there, far beyond what the sword swinging barbarians of today would tell you. You make it your quest to seek out the lost knowledge of the dragon priests.

OR

You are disgusted by the vile hedge-magic the reach witchmen - the forsworn - use. You feel hagravens are an affront to magic and humanity and feel you must wage war on them and the forsworn who shelter them. You begin your investigation in markarth, and find yourself more caught up in a web of lies than you intended....

Legacy Raider +30

Im playing a shield/shock Altmer mage. As an undercover Thalmor double agent his mission is to destabilize imperial rule by assisting the stormcloacks. In desperate times people turn a blind eye to danger and seek help wherever they can get it, Ulfric is unwittingly a Thalmor tool.

I'm generally the same way ('splorin type).

My current character is also a mage. The focal point is the College at Winterhold. Although, I'm taking it slow through the college, doing the side quests.

Also I back story it so that I consider some exploring related to my course work. Like studying Draugr.

I was an Altmer (High Elf) when I played a mage and role played that I was a guy who was at the battle of the Red Ring and was essentialy betrayed by the Thalmor as they left me to die after the battle was over. I then wanted revenge on all of my Thalmor breathren so I joined the Stormcloaks and kicked their asses right out of Skyrim.

As for your character, i'm not sure. Hopefully my post will give you some ideas.

My mage (more of a witch) is a Breton from Cyrodiil who was a young member of the Synod, following her mother's footsteps. However she was always too curious and too power hungry for her own good... she was obsessed with acquiring more and more magical power and knowledge. An illegal experiment with daedra summoning ended in the death of one of her colleagues, and she was expelled from the organisation and cast out from her home by her disgusted and disappointed mother. She wandered Tamriel for years, seeking only to expand her magical horizons. Now she is living on the outskirts of the Fall Forest in Skyrim. The residents of Ivarstead know her to be an enigmatic, powerful woman not to be crossed...

She spends her time seeking magical knowledge and objects of magical power and there is almost nothing she will not do, though she is not without morals; however sometimes, the lust for power can overcome her senses.

((she lives in the alchemist's shack, I've actually created a nice little mod to expand it and make it a bit better with an enchantment table and stuff. If you want it, I could hook you up ;)))

I still vote badassery.
the purpose of your mage must be "being the most badass mage of skyrim's province"

That's the major disapointment with Skyrim. There's lots to do but none of it feels like it makes the slightest difference.

I've struggled for a few months having a reason to start a mage and being able to immerse myself with it, but you gave me some awesome ideas there!

My mage came to Skyrim to learn at the College of Winterhold. She had heard about it in Cyrodil and decided to venture into Skyrim so she could find her way there. The main reason she picked to go to the college is to read books, study magic, and have a place to hideout when she is tired.

How would you role-play a "don't give a f&*k bout anyone", selfish mage who can... dragon shout? I mean, dragon shouts seem to be so closely tied to the main quest and about being the prophesized Dragonborn, it's hard to ignore the fact that the prophecy is being shoved down my throat when what I really like to imagine is, "I'm only studying the way of of the Voice for my own personal benefits, I don't care about being Dragonborn".

no worries. these are in fact all aspects of my current mage character just split apart and expanded on. as you can guess, i tend not to have many problems staying in character and making decisions based on what he would do :P

i'm really glad i set some time apart to create some motivations for my character. it has made the gameplay 100x more engaging as everything actually has a meaning behind it. i'd definitely recommend setting up some basic rules / motives / ambitions for any skyrim character you make because it really lets you make the most of the game

You learned that the people of Skyrim don' t like magic and you plan on making them respect it a little more, especially the bandits. Also the dragons have sparked your curiositiy and the dragon priests that worshiped them are really getting your interest. All of those strange dreams you had about dragons that made you travel to Skyrim are starting to make sense now. Impress some of those Nords with a firebolt spell or two.

So alot of this is motivation for a new character

what I need is motivation for an older character which I dont wish to stop useing its already gone down and completed the mage questline (still live in the dormitory off to the side rather than the huge lonely arch mage quarters...)

Spoiler
Magic level is 100 in all schools except for Restoration and Alchemy due to restoration being very boring to level past 77 and alchemy really has no use for me since i can heal my self and dont use weapons so have nothing to poison

Become a evil wizard and burn all who give you lip or stand in your path...parlayze and wall of flames always brings out a evil laugh when you cripple someone then roast them alive as they lie helpless on the ground mwa ha ha :)

I also like to think of dremora lords as my evil minions that i summon to do my bidding

Try a mage who is obcessed with history and the Dwemer try to learn all you can about them. Try to find rare artifacts and become a scholar who needs to learn mysteries of the universe and learn the machinations that run the world, study the foundations of magic and how it effects the world, learn how magic effects all of the physical elements within the world, in the meantime try to collect a vast fortune to fund your studies and greed. That is similar to how my character is in terms of study you can flesh out a personality from that.
