Self-Imposed roleplaying rules?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:36 am

I know not everyone plays this way, but I would like some ideas for rules I could use for roleplaying. I have the basic rules of my characters personality, but I just want general rules like- sleep every night - or eat. I already don't fast travel, and wait when crafting to make time seem more realistic. Anyone else have any good ones

My character tries to avoid killing animals, as they are Kynareth's creations. Kyne's Peace and Animal Allegiance help with this!

I play as a Nord who hates and fears magic and technology. So, naturally, since I want to be "in the role" and feel what my character feels, I don't touch the controller or turn the XBox on because it is a Daedric Artifact of Evil and Cowardice.

Since I'm pretty much there anyway:

EVERYONE DIES ON SIGHT.

I'm Skyrim's uncatchable, unkillable, merciless, seriou killer. I am the answer with the question. I am the night that beckons the day. I am silent afterglow that fills your room on a full moon's night. I AM THE EVIL VERSION OF BATMAN!

Make sure you have plenty of food, and stay at an inn if yiu're near one. Perhaps stay up for an hour drinking mead, listening to the bard and chatting with locals? Do what your character would do. For example, a vegetarian wouldn't kill animals unless it was absolutely unavoidable. A warrior wouldn't think of enrolling in the College of Winterhold. And an assassin certainly wouldn't bring a follower along - they'd ruin the stealthiness for sure! I also tend to walk in cities (unless it's raining!) and marry a character who you have a connection with - perhaps that follower who's been with you through the ups and the downs, for example. Just the little things that make your game more realistic.

Niamh is not there for the main quest, or indeed for any quest.
She found herself in Skyrim 200 years into the future after having gone to sleep in Cyrodiil with Vilja near bruma.

As you can imagine she is not happy about this and is very much following her own path. She also doesn't know that Vilja, by now, will be dead and gone. It makes for interesting roleplaying.

Sleeping when I feel my characters been awake too long, not killing anything that's not trying to kill me, not very good with the eating part because i'm sure my person has starved to death about 5 times by now if this was real life but I try, I try to not fast travel as often but sometimes I do if I keep getting frustrated from dying on the same path about 3 times, but I take the carriage too.

head directly to riverwood for some bucolic living!

help out around town, chop some wood, indulge in idle gossip, then chop some more wood. you only leave town for purposes of hunting and planned expeditions with faendal. you shun the elitist attitudes of the "city folk," and though it should go without saying, you've never cast a single spell in your life, and you never will. in fact, you avoid anything with magical properties, period. however, you enjoy an "honest pay for honest work," and you wear the sweat on your brow with pride, indulging in simple, guileless activities, collecting ingredients for potions and collecting raw materials for forging. also, you are extremely racist towards all khajiit, and understandably so.

im rping a ranger/hunter some rules i set my self to are carry a realistic amount of gear which for me is around 80lbs, when hunting i only kill a sensible amount of prey, visit towns to restock on supplies which is about every 3 days, and as of yet i haven't leveled any of the crafting skills but will probably to alchemy and smithing when i need gear which i probably wont go above leather, and i havent started the mq probably wont for this character.

No smithing weapons and armor. Only use what you find and can buy.

No improving weapons or armor, I only used a two-handed weapon once out of desperation, like my character would (a flaming greatsword vs. a master vampire, almost didn't make it), no maces or axes, no pickpocketing, no destruction, restoration, or conjuration magic, no enchanting (except for using prefilled soul gems), lots of alchemy whenever I get a chance, only use potions to restore health, only go on quests that don't seem out of my league, go through with it anyway if it's for the greater good to try (like the Wolf Queen quest; J'derras had a hard time with that.), used the console to make every Thalmor hostile to me (used console to kill off essential ones once I bring them down to near death).

I'm also keeping a journal of what my chara.cter does every day, adding roleplaying stuff that can't really be represented by gameplay

No killing anyone that my character doesn't identify as evil. So basically, animals and any NPC that doesn't attack me on sight.

I never wear clothing or armor worn by corpses. Most armor would have to be custom fit, so it doesn't make sense, and I don't want to wear anything covered in blood and gore. (Icky.) It also gives me a good excuse for smithing armor for myself and my companions or spending gold in the shops.

Playing an Orc who refuses to trade with any non-orc merchant. It's pretty tough to get gold in the type of quantity that you need to go house shopping. He's currently got Breezehome and the one in Windhelm all decked out and is out trying to build up enough cash for the one in Riften. The cash rewards from radient quests is actually a significant portion of my income.

When staying at someone's house for free, pay with manual labour. I always help at a mill by dragging tree trunks on the saw mill, on which the npc then proceeds by pulling the lever. ^^ I do this mostly for about half a day, 'say' goodbye to the npc and am on my merry way again. The woman at the mill of whose men all went to war likes me a lot now. Same for Hod and Gerdur, I actually did a lot of work when I stayed there for a while at the start. Got a nice starting capital too by chopping wood for them.

No compass, no crosshair, eating and sleeping. My (now retired) Nord never cast a spell or made a potion, and my new assassin doesn't wear any armour except for some bracers.

With my Imperial it's 'anything goes', but my Nord follows some guidelines. She eats breakfast, lunch and dinner, chowing down on daintier fare in the cities (Elsweyr fondue, mm) and making do with chunks of bread and meat in the wilderness. She loathes the taste of potions and can't imagine how anything made with the charred hide of a skeever could possibly be good for you, so regular food is her only recourse when she's been hurt. She thinks that imprisoning the souls of creatures in gems is barbaric, too, so enchanted gear is a no-no. Magic in general weirds her out. (You won't see her going anywhere near the College.) She sleeps at least six hours each night unless circumstances prevented her from catching some shut-eye the night before, in which case she's out like a light for up to twelve hours. If ever she takes on a follower, she treats them kindly (they're people, not pack mules) and outfits them with the best armour and weapons she can find or afford. When it comes to finding things, she only loots the bodies of animals and people she reaaallly disliked when they were still breathing. The bodies of innocents or people she admired are treated with dignity, arranged in respectful poses with flowers or pieces of jewelry on their chests. As for 'finding' things (AKA stealing), she'll only take anything marked in red if her health is perilously low and she needs some sweetrolls ASAP or if the item she's 'stealing' is something that seems like it should be up for grabs (like the platters of fruit and cheese found in the rooms of some inns.) In the first case, she makes a point of gifting her, ahem, unwilling benefactor with a pretty trinket or two after the crisis has passed to thank him for his generosity.
Anyway, those are just some of the rules I have her obey.

no fast travel other than carriages

Set timescale to 6

only have armor that make sence, for example no heavy armor or combat looking light armor (elven, glass and so on) for a stealth character.

I try to sleep every day if i can and try do not wait if i can sleep (and it make sence) for example if i get into a town at night and want to sell things i sleep instead of waiting untill the shops open

as of late i have starting turning off several HUD option. compass only show cardinal points (nothing more at all), don't have a crosshair (but i see what i pick up, if it's stealing or not and stealth indicator) was supprised that archery is prett accurate to rl archery when it comes to aiming with out a crosshair, so even an archer char could give a try and turn off the crosshair if they want (only need to switch it back on if you dont like it)

that's what i have for all my character now

Hold your breath IRL when you go underwater, or is that taking it a bit far?
Enjoy your immersion!

I do the following:

-limit to number of arrows that may be carried, in keeping with actual practice
-armor and weapon(s) must suit the role (none of the 'flashy' stuff for a Thief, for example)
-no inventory access during combat (may take potions/eat food ahead of time, though)
-skills must suit the role (a 'pure' warrior wouldn't use Enchanting but a Paladin would, for example)
-hot-keys may be used, but no Favorites menu access during combat
-only buy one home, which must be the one most suited for the role (Honeyside for a Thief, for example)
-no joining guilds not suited to the role, unless destruction thereof is required (mod required to kill off the TG)
-Main and Civil War lines to be started/completed only if the role calls for it

plus any role-specific limitations. Some concessions will inevitably have to be made, due to lack of proper support for many roles, but which ones to make are a matter of player discretion.

My roleplaying character tries to eat a few time a day and sleep everynight (finding an inn or campsite). He also stays away from the Main Quest and avoids Guilds that do not suit him. He doesn't fast travel but might use carriages from time to time. He wears Leather armor and a hood, despite higher level armor being available.
