Starting a Ranger, got some questions

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 3:14 am

Hi all,

I'm going to be starting a ranger type character, mostly proficient in bows with minimal fighting skills and was interested in whether it would make sense for me to join the Companions.

I haven't joined them with any of my other toons since I tend to mostly play mages and rogue types. And from an RP point of view it just doesn't make sense to join them with a mage or a sneaky rogue. I'm not a big fan of warriors, but rangers for some reason appeal to me. And the first time I met the companions I remember one of them seemed to be using a bow, so I was thinking that it might be a good idea to join them. That way I would get to do their quests without it being out of character.

Also, does anyone know of mods that add staffs (for fighting, not spell casting) and/or spears (can't imagine why no one in Skyrim figured out that you can sharpen one of a stick and use it to poke someone). Also, looking for a mod that adds animal summoning so that I can pretend my ranger is summoning animal companions.

Thanks

I don't think the Comapnions have anything against "rangers". Aela, one of their senior members, is pretty much one, focusing mostly on ranged combat and only carry a dagger for melee.

When in doubt concerning badass archery, I always think of the orc that killed Boromir.

Aragorn was considered a Ranger and he was skilled with the sword, so I wouldnt consider every ranger character mainly skilled in ranged.

The problem Ive found is what to wear. Right now I have the steel armour with a hood, there just isnt that much clothes for a ranger. The only cape is on the nightengale armour, there are no long coat type pieces with hoods, I just dont know....

This http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranger_%28character_class%29 has some good information about Rangers.

My ranger is called that because she goes ranging, not because she uses a bow. (Although she does use a bow.)

I like the long sleeved fur armor with a hood. Thieves Guild armor would be good though, I think. Capes would just get caught in the brush.

I'm pretty sure that Boromir was the badass in that clip. "I used to fight Uruk-Hai like you, but then I took some arrows to the chest. And you know what I did then? Kept fighting Uruk-Hai."

Try combining Nightingale Armor, apprentice hood ( much darker shade than novice), wolf boots and wolf gloves.

They all match color-wise. Usually the nightingale armor w/ light boots and gloves makes him look VERY agile, and a tad too stealthy. Combining it with the wolf gloves and wolf boots make the char look alot more... I dunno. Wanderer w/ cape etc, but more armor-looking. Not as thin and slim as he/she usually would. Anyways, just try it, you'll love it :)
Tried this on my own char, a sort of wanderer/guardian of the northern coast-ish. Looked AWESOME.

Hi all,

On my second character, i only joined and did the first quest for them to be able to buy Skyforge weapons. I'm playing a permanent level 1 character and the Skyforge Sword is one of the best ones in the game at that level.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=10733. It lets you summon wolves, sabre cats, bears, and spriggans, plus potent and permanent versions of all four.

Also take a look at http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=10860. It makes the same critters above friendly to you. They will even join in a fight on your side if the battle gets near enough to them.

I have a larger question about a ranger character - what quests would be appropriate?

There's
Spoiler
Kyne's trials and the Gildergreen thing
, but aside from those I can't think of any real nature-focused quests.

I guess bounty hunting and general hunting would work, but that doesn't necessarily give a character enough to do. None of the main quests *really* fit, I think.

Too bad, though, since the Nightingale armor would rock. Maybe I'll make a character who proceeds through the TG to that point, and then "leaves it all behind" to be a ranger...

Dude.... I always play rangers in TES. I've tried every clothing combination possible for a good ranger look and imo there are a few good looks.

1 - novice mage robe with Alik'r hood (or novice mage hood) imperial light boots, fur gauntlets. This is a very good long coat and hood combo.

2 - Riften guard armour with Alik'r hood, imperial light boots, fur gauntlets. (good scout look)

Imperial light helm goes well with both of the above.

No they dont look like traditional Aragorn look... but you have to go with the feel of how a ranger would dress in a snowy landscape. The novice mage robe is a good snow camo look, and a nice long coat to keep all those herbs and poisons. I've tried the nightingale... it doesn't look good for a ranger imo. Batman sure, but no ranger.

Well the companions are more close battle then range but the thieves guild is more like a range killing group I would join the thieves guild just because the companions are more close range battles in my own opinion.

NO! Don't join the Companions if you want to be a ranger! It's more of a Warriors guild.

If anything, just hang out around where there are hunters camps and pretend you know the people selling deer hides, etc
