Beta Broke My Game

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:39 pm

I know, it's a risk inherent in running a beta... in hindsight it was a bad idea to try and fix what wasn't broken.

However, I did the stupid thing and opted in to the Skyrim beta. Immediately after it loaded, I went and updated my SKSE (script extender) to the version that matches the beta build. I know, using outside software to replace some scripts might make it so that you cannot help me, but, in my defense, I have NEVER had a problem with SKSE before.

And now, when I try to load a savegame, the game hangs on the load screen, then CTDs. No matter how I try to open the game, nothing works.

Would it be possible to get help with this?

If at all possible, I want to back out of the beta and revert my game to the last formally released patch, but I cannot figure out how to do so.

As of now, the beta you had has become the latest official patch, and there is no going back. (Unless you had the foresight to manually create your personal backup copy of 1.5 files, which apparently is not the case.)

Since you mention SKSE, you probably have several mods on your system.

The thing to do is to remove them all (not merely disable, but completely uninstall/eliminate/delete/purge/rinse) from your Data folder. Once you get the game running in a pure vanilla configuration, you can try adding the mods back one at a time to see which ones you can continue with.

The unfortunate fact is, that some mods simply are not compatible with the current game version, and need to be updated by the mod developer. An even more unfortunate fact is, that with no updated CK available yet, the mod developers are unlikely to be able to even begin to do that.

I have a bad feeling that this is going to break my game even more. I'll try it, though.

Would there be any way to back out of the beta version, though?

No, as it's no longer a beta. It went live today.

As long as it was the beta, yes. But it is no more the beta, and everybody, who has had their Steam client on-line now has to contend with it.

The only way now would be to set your Steam client off-line and overwrite the game files with a manually archived copy of the 1.5 version.

In general, if you play with mods, and a version update is imminent, it is wise to have a manual backup copy of the common/skyrim folder for just such a situation.

Even with every mod I have ever downloaded removed from the game, completely deleted, GONE, my game still does a CTD. I don't know what to do. I did exactly what you said I should, and it didn't work. Now I'm getting upset. I love skyrim, and I want to be able to play it.

I don't know what to say. As far as I know, it should be able to run in a pure vanilla configuration, and you should be able to start from that and rebuild your mod setup.

Perhaps there could be the possibility, that you still have some loose mod-related script files, or the like, left in the Data folder? If so, you would have to search and destroy them (or delete the Data folder and re-verify your game cache, which would be time and download consuming, unless you first set aside and then replace some of the biggest, clearly vanilla/DLC-related files.)
