Robes are more fitting for a wizard/pure mage, plus if you invest in Alteration, Mage Armor is useful. Armor is more of a cleric/battlemage thing, if you're the type of character that concentrates on offensive strategy (Destruction, weapons) and needs something to withstand deadly blows. I say both have their advantages.

Overall, armor is better because you can put the same enchants on armor as you can robes.

I wish robes had better enchants then armor, but that is not the case.

You do not need armor if you don't get hit. :) With conjuration and destruction, it is possible to avoid getting hit altogether in many situations. And there is restoration magic, in case you get hit.

If you invest in alteration, you can eventually get as much damage protection as the best armor. But then again, you probably won't need it by then because you will probably end up paralyzing everyone before they can hit you.

Mage armor perks in alteration is widely considered to be not a very good deal. If you plan on getting hit, perhaps wearing real armor is better.

I use light armour until I get the mage armour perks. After that its strictly cloth. Depends on the kind of mage youre playing.

What ever happened to Armor making magic not as effective? wasn't that the main thing to Balance out Robes and Armor?
now all you got is Mage Armor perk and I cannot get myself to use any of the Defense Spells >:|

but I Wear robes/clothes anyway.

This is my philosophy. My pure mages wear robes or regular clothing they enchant themselves. They have never needed armor, and do not bother with the oaken/stone/etc... flesh spells. The only thing that ever really significantly hurts them is magic from other spellcasters.
