Creating new characters is a hassle in Dead is Dead.

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 12:37 pm

I've been playing dead is dead for the past little while, and so far I've gone through 3 characters (R.I.P). My only issue with this is that when I create a new character I have to complete the tutorial (30minutes roughly), go to river wood and clear bleak falls barrow in order to obtain the fus ro da shout, then head over to whiterun and kill the initial dragon so I can actually have shouts during the game. Also if I want whirlwind sprint and for dragons to actually appear I have to go see the greybeards and complete all that tedious dialog and simple actions. The grey beards are an exception perhaps, but for me to start the game I have to invest about ~2 hours into doing all this, the tutorial alone is unavoidable and takes a solid half hour. It's such a pain in the ass to do this with every new character. I'm on console so mods are out of the question.

What do you guys who play D.I.D do when creating a new character? How do you avoid all this useless time wasting in order to 'start the game'?

When I'm playing Dead is Dead I usually drop the MQ, leaving right after we've escaped Helgen. I know that it takes quite a while to activate the MQ with dragons and dragonshouts etc, so when I play D.I.D I would roleplay a character who isn't a dragonborn or doesn't give a [censored] about being one kinda. :P

Makes creating new characters much more easier, and you don't have to go through all that hassle everytime you start a new game.

I don't play Dead is Dead, but one piece of advice that I'd offer is to make a save game right before you choose your race/appearance, and then you can at least skip the cart ride introduction.

You could also make a save immediately after exiting the introductory dungeon, or at one point afterwards (Riverwood, Killing first Dragon, etc.) and always start from there if each new character you make is the same race and appearance as the old one anyways. Though if that were the case I'd wonder why you're bothering to Dead is Dead anyways. Or like Erginho says, just skip the main quest or do things different each time so that it's not such a chore to make a new character.

What platform are you on? For PC players there's an http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9557 out there, and it's pretty awesome. I've used it for a few characters, and I think it has so many possibilities.
So, DiD or not, I really recommend this mod since it breaks the monotony of the long starting quest.

What you might want to do is create a permanent save immediately after getting out of Helgen or killing the dragon at Whiterun, that way you don't have to go through the process every time. If you're on PC you can open up the console to change your character's appearances . . . although I think changing your race does something odd to your perks and stats.

I'm on console so I can't use mods, like I said. I've already saved right before the appearance so I can skip the cart ride. I may have to make a save for each race after the tutorial or something.

When I play D.I.D, I normally have a save that is RIGHT after the tutorial and start again from that. I can't stand going thru that tutorial over and over again.

I am a fan of the DID playstyle and have been for a while before Skyrim released. I can't play any other way. Going through that stuff is just part of it.

It gives me the extra push to stay alive. It just adds to the feeling I get from playing DID. THAT is why I play in the first place.

the game automatically creates a hard save before character creation. it's not an auto-save.

for me, the point of DID is to play a lot of different character types. and, therefore, i wouldn't always need to do what you desire to do anyways.

having said that, like others stated: make a perma-save (go artistic with the save so you can easily spot it, lol) after completing the 1st dragon and whirlwind.

as well, you could try and alternate shout-centric characters with non-shouters, on subsequent playthroughs. or, even a 2:1 ratio.

for me, there are just so many characters that i've made that have nothing to do with being dragonborn.

btw, senor cinco- where the heck is the next DID thread??!!

i'm ready to start another DID......

Just avoid the problem all together by trying REALLY hard not to die.

*Possible Spoilers Ahead* this has been a P.S.A. :D

im on console as well, and i create base save files to play from, heres what you do.

disconect from PSN/XBOX live.

delete system cache/remove game updates

load skyrim and create your base character as normal

complete tutorial and main quest (stop main quest when you have to go fight the dragon at the watch tower)

use various glitches/exploits to level to 15 (sneak into a wall, talk to dunmer at black brier meadery for infinite skill boosts, etc.)

obtain lots of money useing skelton book glitch located here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb_mLBHPfUc

buy whiterun house and all upgrades for said house

complete the oghma infinium quest, then use the glitch to level to 81 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhDhPKF1lBY

save game. . .up to 3 times

I dont take any credit for anything found in the above, and total completion time can range from 5-8 hours depending on how fast you go.

now be sure that as you level up to 15 you dont spend any perks and put your 15 level up stat points into something like health as it is good no matter what the playthrough. then as you perform the oghma infinium glitch dont level up at all, if you need to check your progress that bad save it and level, if it all looks good load your previous save and continue.
i do this alot, i have 3 level 15 character with 10k gold ready to level to 81 (different races)
the reason you stop the main quest right before you go to the watch tower is because after you finish it and become thane that triggers random dragons, that choice is up to your current game.

if your one that wants a completly new look to your character every time, then this will not really work for you. but if your the kind that spends alot of time going through the intro or characters because your not happy with the current playstyle, this will help.

I don't consider it 'useless' time in the first place, since I tend to take advantage of the 'Essential' status of my 'assistant' to level up combat skills before leaving Helgen. Yeah, it's a bit cheesy, but it insures I don't lose combat effectiveness while gaining levels from all the crafting I do. I can see why some folks might think so, though, as it does get a bit repetitive after several characters.

Fortunately for me, though, the fact that each character plays differently keeps it from feeling tedious, since they approach the same problem(s) in different ways.

I too use dead is dead - percentage of chars reaching their teens is not good :) However those that do tend to be fun.

Bite the bullet and spend a day creating lots a characters then save them at the point you consider to be the end of the boring getting going bit. You then have a bank of different characters of different races to commence playing D.I.D with.
