Minigames (fishing, gambling, etc)

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:20 pm

I know this sounds stupid, but I've been reminiscing back when Morrowind and Fable were being compared with each other, and there were features in both games that revolutionized RPGs. Remember Maiq with his fishing rod next to him by the islands to the east? Two games later, and we still can't fish. Fable removed fishing completely and...I think we all know what happened to that series.

Anyways, I thought it would be really neat if there could be little minigames here and there. Nothing cheap and half assed. It needs to be immersive and funtional. Why would I want to fish? alchemy, cooking, perhaps rare creatures too fast to catch if you jumped right in can be caught. I also thought gambling could be featured in The Elder Scrolls universe. Red Dead Redemtion pulled it off really well in my opinion.

Skyrim has these little tasks you can do already such as gathering potatoes on a farm, and working the lumber mill. Why not add a little bit more? I'm not asking for anything gimmicky but something extra to help us really feel like we're a part of the world. Something pacifistic that draws you in.

fishing of zelda and gambling of RdR or NV? sounds nice ^^ Skyrim is missing a comedic "fun" factor. Its nice to be a darkish fantasy, but i need some comedic relief somewhere! Mini-games would be a good way to get closer to that.

I'd call it more of a time sink than a "fun factor".
I'd love to have them as well. There's been several times where I loaded up Skyrim, looked at the quest list and just played something else since I didn't feel like doing any quests. Especially the fishing part - would love to stand by a river and fish up ingredients.

I loved going out on the boat with whats her face in twilight princess ^^ it was a nice break from the grind. I had caught all the fish, even the grand hylian loach and still went out sometimes just to hear the creak of the boat and the flying of the rod through the air and the splish splash of a hook meeting water. I loved watching the shadow of the fish underwater and the anticipation of the bite. Even when they got away it was fun. Zelda pulled off the only fishing mini-game that i never got bored of. It was...pleasent :3

I think they might need to create their own gambling game, as poker wouldn't quite fit in the world. Other games have done it, so I think Bethesda could pull it off well.

I like the idea. One of my favorite things to do in Red Dead Redemption was to enter a saloon and gamble for a while. Miscellaneous mini-games are excellent. This may sound worse than your suggestion though: I think it'd be cool if there was an optional cut scene available of your character grinding on his food while watching bards play music in the pubs. But, I can settle with just imagining it.

Gambling..that would be fun. Real life I never win; in NV I ended up having to sell some weapons because I p**sed so much money away. :)

I'm all about mini-games. I invented a bowling minigame for Skyrim involving the Telekinesis spell, wine bottles, and cabbages. Takes a long time to set up each frame though.

You can fish.

Clearly, diving in and catching fish with your hands is not what I meant. -_-

Minigames would be fun.

Gambling would be nice and fun.

Fishing is a huge plus! I WANT TO FISH!

Also, maybe a hunting minigame with Aela, and other NPCs? Like you go around hunting whatever and you bet your money which one can get the biggest kill.

More Brawls and have them like respawn in certain Inns. I always enjoy a good Brawl. Also, make brawls harder! NI!

Oh.. Another fun Minigame. Arm Wrestling! Like, you gotta keep pushing your attack button over and over again to win! That would be fun!

Also, wood-cutting. Need to get that wood some how, eh?

And I have so many ideas.. By Talos, my list will go on!

One thing I loved about GTA was watching tv, surfing the web, getting drunk, or bowling. Red Dead also has the weapon challenges. We only get lock picking, crafting, and chopping wood in Skyrim. At least you can brawl though, that's fun.

Ya they do. but if you tried to catch a fish underwater the dam thing would either swim far away from you or keep moveing foward just out of your reach when you get a little closer it swims a little farther not in skyrim they can be plucked like graqes

I think if they implemented a trapping/hunter skill, then we could set up traps to catch wild animals, or fish using a pole, net, etc. If the wild animals could get scared off and run away, it would give us incentive to level up trapping and truly play the game like a hunter.

This would really be nice, there is so much fighting and questing... would love some stuff to do when taking a break from that.

I am 100% for this.
It'd be sweet to challenge someone to a Robin Hood type contest to see who is the best shot.

Indeed, minigames would be fun. I've been thinking that Skyrim lacks a bit of comedic, fantasy value. Perhaps not card gambling, maybe dice? Or have the bard college actually do something, and be able to play a lute or other instruments for a few gold here and there.

I agree that fishing and gambling would allow for more role play in the game... say spending a day on the lake fishing with your wife or becoming a drunk and gambling your life savings away, its more fun that not having anything of the sort, right?

I saw someone post something about playing the instruments laying around as well, the would be interesting. Maybe add a "Music" skill?

Im all for having mini games, challenges, etc to add to the game!

Being able to fish for alchemical ingrediants would be great! A lot of room to add misc. quests if you implement fishing. Gambling would be useful if gold had its uses, but let's be honest, gold has no purpose other than buying houses. Little bits like that add flair to games that everyone can appreciate.
