Dawnstar sword...any good?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:42 pm

I did one of the quests (not gonna say which one) and received the Dawnstar sword or blade. Usually with the strong potions and enchanted apparel that i use i can grind weapons up to 300 damage. For instant Deadric weapons. I tried the same with the Dawnstar, but could not reach a higher damage than 82. Not quite sure why i can exceed a higher damage to this weapon. But i digress. What are your experiences with the Dawnstar and how would you rate this sword or blade. Please, tell me everything you can say about this weapon and what you think of it.

Are you referring to Dawnbreaker? It's not affected by smithing perks, so perhaps that's why the damage rating is capped.

I have been using Dawnbreaker on my priestess character. Her mission is to cleanse Skyrim's nord ruins of restless undead. The explodey effect of Dawnbreaker can be really helpful if it procs when more than one draugr is around. Otherwise, it's just fun to have a glowy sword!

Overall, the Daedric Sword has better stats than any Rare I've encountered.

Basically.. it does maybe 6 damage less than a Daedric sword, due to the fire damage buffs, and it explodes the undead.

The only artifact weapon that's better than a daedric weapon of the same type is Chillrend, and only if you find it when you're level 46+.

I found Dawnbreaker fairly late on my main char, and was able to smith it up to just a couple hitpoints short of my ebony swords. Use it a lot on that char on undead monsters, as the explosion affect is pretty cool :-) But then I found it on another character recently, and wasn't able to smith it up so well, only got it up to 2/3 of the damage of the ebony's. Probably found it at a lower level, or maybe 1.5 changed some stuff about smithing that affected it, not sure. It and Mehrune's Razor (also smiths up nicely) are about the only uniques I ever bother using.

Dawnbreaker is a fine blade, but what bugs me about it is the explosion the ensues after striking a dead thing. If your in an area with a lot of loot or rare loot then the explosion caused by the undead enchant on the sword sends everything to Sovngarde and you have to seek it out in all the nooks and crannies of where ever it is you are.

I think your wrong there my friend. On my "messing around" toon that has exploited all the exploits, Dawnbreaker had a damage rating of 320( but that was done using the exploits).

Dawnbreaker can be improved yes, but it's not tied to a smithing perk. Thus, a steel sword will end up doing more damage if you get enough +smithing items.

There's very few unique weapons that can be improved fully sadly (click the link in my sig!), which is why daedric weapons is nearly always the best choice if you want to do as much damage as possible.

what i ask myself is.. why would you want that?

300 dmg? with stuff like that you could run around completely naked, only equipping a shield and a weapon on master...

Ah, that's probably why my Dawnbreaker and my Daedric sword had similar stats.... the character I was using them on went the Light Armor route, and didn't have the Daedric perk either.

That's why he's my messing around toon, I want to run the map and destroy anything in my path  The only thing that even comes close to putting up a fight for him is an ancient dragon  But 300 damage really isn't that much when facing a fully armored NPC, it still takes 3-4 swings of my sword to end their life, and around 4-5 for an ancient dragon.

I use double wielded Deadric swords with 300 damage. One power attack is enough to kill any dragon. I only needed one power attack to kill Alduin...to give you an example of how powerful double wielded weapons are. :starwars:

All well and good but Thorin only uses a single steal imperial sword  but he lets his imperial bow do the talken most times ( 560 damage on the bow, 370 on my sword)

I don't care for stats that much, it's not like the game is that difficult that you need the very best equipment (except against Briarhearts and Marauders :P), but i really hate how the Dawnbreaker's shockwave throws items around. It's a real good way to throw quest items trough the dungeon geometry (happened to me in Valthume).

That's the only thing that bugs me bout dawnbreaker, which is why I stopped using it. It ruined a couple quests for me by sending quest items to oblivion.

its not that powerful, but it looks so nice!

BEWARE this thing somehow behaves like a longsword sometimes on weapon plaques or on shelves.. so it might bounce around the room sometimes

Drawnbreaker is alright weapon for battle mage and the undead explosion is nice when you are surround by gang of Draugr. As weapon for a warrior, I would opt for Ebony sword. IMO.

No sword in the game can match how amazing that Nightingale blade looks... Though I will admit, Dawnbreaker comes damn close.

I use it for the graphics and because I prefer using Uniques for RPG purposes. I like to pretend Skyrim is an RPG :)

I also don't like how the explosion effect tosses things around not to mention it can bring other enemies into the fight that you aren't ready to face yet. It is very nice looking though.
