Going the College of Winterhold without being a Mage?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 5:45 am

Hey guys. I made a new char earlier today , he is a Dark Elf - Sneak Archer. But I wanted something different this time than the simple sneak archer build. I will use the Bound Bow as well as Calm , invisible and Fury. That includes Illusion, Conjuration, Archery, Sneak.
Ok, so you see, this is not a proper mage character and I was wondering, should I go and try the quests at the Colledge of Winterhold as I have never been there with any of my previous chars. Or I should better do that with my pure mage (or battlemage) on the next run?

what do you suggest?

sry for the typo in the topic's title :/ can't edit a title

Do it. It's one of the most amazing questlines ever.

You dont even have to be a magic user to do the CoW questline...

You don't have to do any of the questlines to benefit from being a member of the College. My character right now has 100 in both Illusion and Conjuration but has never done a single quest for the College. Eventually I'll get to them but I just don't feel like starting with the dreary "Under Saarthal" quest. At any rate, it's suprising you haven't done the questline. After the first one it gets really good. Do it.

It's not like any of the guilds have requisites that actually have anything to do with aptitude in the purviews their guilds are about... so yeah you can become a College of Winterhold student while being the most novice of mages... if a mage at all.

It is a good questline and you should get round to it at some point. Honestly though, I'd save it for your mage. I found it really enjoyable role-playing a pure mage at the College. If it were me, I'd find that a bit detracted from if my character wasn't really hugely dependent on magic.

Of course, everyone's different and you may find you prefer it that way. But if you are planning on rolling a battlemage next, I'd save the CoW for that.

It doesn't matter if you're a mage or not, so you might as well do it. Being a mage won't add to the experience, and it's a really short questline.

If you're asking for a roleplay prespective, bound bows are conjuration magic, aren't they? SMastering the arts are reason enough to join.

The bound bow is great although I do wish it popped out a bit quicker. The only issue I've really had with it so far is that it's so bright in dark areas it can make targeting kind of difficult at times.

This is one thing i always thought was dumb, I think you should have to be well skilled in the areas suited to the Guild in order to be made leader of it.

It's kind of odd when my Warrior character who only knows a few Destruction and Restoration spells can be named Archmage...

Spell breaker + basic flame (you got it at the beginning of the game) and a frost spell/shout is all you need to beat the mage college quest line.

Unlike Morrowind there's no minimum level needed in a certain skill to advance rank.
