Patches,online updates and community patches.

Hey everybody,

hopes you guys are doing well.

I want to talk about some things that i had on my mind for years now.

First things first.I love the TES games and Beth is doing a good overall job with it but there are things like the new patches breaking old stuff that happens,i know...it's alright if they revert or fix what they broke with their patch within a short period of time.In my opinion they should work alot more on the major bugs instead of working on DLC.
Now this is where i was thinking to myself.
Back in the days when it was impossible to update a console game via internet(last console generation). They had to release a much more polished game.I get the feeling, and not only with Bethesda,no.I get the feeling that companies today evolved a certain mentality.Like"oh look at this quest bug,hmm we got to do something about it."...other guy says"oh that's not a big issue. We can fix that later with an update".I think you know what i mean. Some people might say"but games today are much more complex than in 2001."Thats true, but at the same time most companies have much more manpower and even more specialized employees compared to 2001.Many companies release unfinished, unpolished copies of their games these days.Another good example is Mass Effect 3.It came out with many bugs
and glitches and the sad thing is,it doesn't have to be that way!!
But like i said, maybe they think if we can fix it later why bother now or maybe they've become lazy.
I dont know but i really dont like that kind of attitude. :nono:

I understand that money is a big factor today.Companies have to make profit but we as costumers that we pay for their work want a good product. If you buy a new car(just an example) that has alot of issues, you go back and let the company fix it or get your money back but you shouldn't be forced to fix it yourself, which happens with PC games very often.
In fact on many modern video games bugs weren't fixed untill finally the company stoped their support for the game, leaving broken stuff unfixed.

Here is where the community kicks in,usually.Very often the people who play the games and are fans of the franshise would step in for the companies to do their job and fix the bugs and glitches for them. That happend with almost every PC game in the last 10 years. Those people use their free time after work and on weekends to make the game better and fix the broken stuff. And the unofficial patches/updates are often better than the original ones and all that without geting paid for it.I really admire what they do for us gamers, thank you guys!

So i dont know what you guys think/feel about all this.I've been playing games for over 20 years now and that is something that really bothers me lately.

Enjoy your games

Having programmed stuff, I can tell you this. It's not easy to catch bugs. For several reasons. One is that in a program of this size with so many things going on, it's impossible to test everything. Two, a programmer not only has to think about what something is supposed to do, but also what someone else might do with it. In other words as a programmer you have to figure out what 9 million other people might do in every single instance of the game. If you think it's easy, try it.

At other times, it's, yes as you said companies need money and they have deadlines, and sometimes even known bugs don't get fixed because of those.

There are games that come out so buggy, that I WILL absolutely blame the developer for doing crappy work. Recent examples would be Sword of the Stars 2 or Stronghold 3. There is no excuse for the state that either of those games came out in (although the devs worked hard to patch them).

Skyrim has it's share of bugs, but it's a pretty stable game, and I think Beth did a nice job with it. They've been doing some patching since release, more then they have in the past, and I applaud them for that as well. At the same time I'm also glad to modders for fixing all the stuff that Beth missed or couldn't do because of time and money constraints.

The complexity of today's games almost guarantees that no games will come out bug free.

And please, people need to stop with the car anologies. They just completely different issues.

What would they do without online updates, like we have on consoles today.Think about it for a moment. They make it easy for themself.Fix stuff later..or not; )
