Bethesda's Reasoning?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 4:27 am

I'm somewhat unclear as to how Bethesda makes decisions, but what was the logic and reasoning behind nerfing the Iron Dagger Smithing method, yet leaving Oghma Infinium glitch untouched?

Please, don't reiterate the commonly used phrase "Bethesda will be leaving all glitches in the game that are deemed fun"- because both smithing Iron Daggers to level 100 Smithing, and using the Oghma Infinium glitch to continuously level your stats are one in the same.

I have not power levelled any of my characters stats, and I do not intend to do so at all, so I'm not being biased towards a certain method of training.

Dunno. I've used neither. I don't find using exploits fun.

The Oghma still works?

Is that for PC only or...?

EDIT: I never got to use, thought it was patched. Most game-exploiting glitches get patched before I hear about them. #bad luck Brian.

Meh, the smithing fix was for balancing the game, the infinium is just a random bug that means nothing. I don't think they changed smithing to ruin anyone's day, they did it so it works better and makes more sense.

The same reasoning they used when they decided the Nords of Windhelm should suspect their Dunmer residents of being Thalmor spies while drinking with their Altmer neighbors.

I don't know anything about the specifics of these two changes you mention, but for any kind of fixes or changes to the game included in updates, I imagine the devs must consider carefully how any change might affect other systems in the game.

Certain fixes might not be practical if they result in new issues somewhere else in the game.

Nah, that book shelf glitch still works. I don't see how that hurts anything though, cause you sure don't have to use it if you don't want to. Self control isn't just something crazy anti-drug advocates tell kids ya know.

They wanted to make smithing increase faster based on the price of the item created...as for why I don't know. Probably because it was a "forced" exploit. If you wanted to use smithing ALL items you made gave the same experience. That annoyed some people who wanted to play legitimately. Where as Ohgma Infinium was a choice.

Just smith something else. Maybe the glitch is proving elusive while the balance patch was easy?

But really, smith something else. Skill gain is based on item value now, which is a good thing for the 98% of people who arnt skill-loopers because it means the guy who's leveling his smithing by crafting high-end armor like the average gamer, now levels up faster than ever before while the guy who just goes from city to city makeing iron daggers gets [censored]-all to show for his [censored]-all amount of effort.

Not sure. Since you ask for my thoughts I'd go with if they fixed it the problem it would cause a larger problem somewhere else that currently does not exist. Many times that is why a patch for an exploit or bug can take a long time before you see it. The same is true for any piece of software one my use. The reasoning is it's not that big of a problem and it's not a game breaking exploit and they want to focus on other bugs and exploits that do break the game.

People who want to cheat will use console commands anyway. For everyone else who wants to cheat but owns a console: buy a PC.

Smithing is an element of the game and Bethesda tweaked it so that those playing the game correctly shared a basis for growth similar to Alchemy. The glitch is an obvious cheat that needs to be done deliberately, it doesn't hurt anyone because it is a single player game.

If I was stuck on the consoles, I'd hope Bethesda would leave a glitch like this alone. Doing questlines at high levels freshens the experience.

It's not like every merchant in Skyrim carries a copy of the Oghma Infinium, you know. It's not the sort of thing you just pick up in bandit loot, either.
