Why do I pass all speech checks with no perks in speech?

Seems like a missed opportunity

Count yourself lucky. I don't even remember the last time I encountered a speech check. I have no idea why they named the skill 'Speech' - it should've been 'Mercantile'.

I don't. I pass the first few, mostly around Whiterun, and then start encountering ones that require perks to pass.

I really think they should have made Speech a primary skill. It should have allowed us to talk our ways out of fights, complete quests faster, and gain larger rewards. Instead, its basically 'pass the speech check or pay 200 gold'.

I've failed a bunch and do have 3 perks into that skill.

The only ones I've passed every time are the one into Whiterun, and the "this is a scam" one entering Riften.

What speech checks?

This.

I've never had any different reactions to:
Valthiem Tower shakedown
First time entering Riften
First time entering Whiterun

Intimidate always ends with VT attacking me, and the city guards just laugh at you and still wont let you in.

I agree with the person who said Speech should have been called Mercantile.

I've seen a few that change. The bard in whiterun has succumbed to intimidation for me before. Other times I've had to brawl with him.

Guys at the gates of whiterun will always give in to persuasion regardless of level... I think that is your learning experience for speech.

I'll have to agree with the OP. With the exception of the College of Winterhold one, I've passed every Speech check I've encoutered, yet I've had no training nor acquired any perks in it.

Of course, I've never trained or taken a perk in Lockpicking either, but I've never encountered a lock I couldn't open with a maximum of 10 picks.

The speech aspect of speech is pretty bad, almost as bad as lockpicking. The only reason it's not as bad as lockpicking is because speceh was merged with MErcantile, and that branch saves it.

There are a few speech checks, but 30ish in speech should clear them. Nothing on the level of Fallout 3 or NV speech checks.

Ive never succeed in speech checks for Skooma dealers, and hardly get Persuasion check on mercenaries... although speech checks inside the cities seems to be easier, but I usually train the skill for a reasonable ammount on buying/selling...
