Stealing from the dead

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:33 am

Sven and I were traveling in the mountains. I don't remember where but it was snowy. A troll was attacking a camp full of hunters. We killed the trool with fire but the 2 hunters were dead.
I looted the bodies but when I went to loot the tents it didn't say take it said Steal.

How is it counted in the game when stealing and what does that to to my character?
My stats say Stolen 1, but I can't remember taking anything.

Also found a cabin in the same area where a guy tried to kill me as soon as I walked in his door. I think he was a necromancer. We took him out but it again said Steal when I tried ripping off his stuff. He was very dead. I put his body in his fire pit. :P

Thanks for any and all help.

For some reason in certain cases even after the npc is dead, their stuff still belongs to them. Makes sense in the cities, not so much out in the wild. I remember that guy in the cabin as well. Don't worry, he tries to kill you no matter what.

Depending on who you steal from and how much you steal, you might get some hired thugs (that are actually hired-bloody-murderers) after you.

So take the stuff from the camp and clean out his cabin then?

Which also doesn't detect circumstances very well in some cases.

Like the situation mentioned in a pickpocket thread - 100 PP, steal a Briarheart's briar heart (killing them), but it's possible to get attacked by thugs "hired" by that Briarheart.

Or the one I ran into doing quests in the Dibella Temple.
Spoiler
I stole the statue, to trigger the "do a penance for us". Got deliberately caught, they took the statue back, and assigned my mission. And then I got attacked by thugs on the road, hired by Hamal to punish the thief.
Wait, what?

OP: ownership has always been a little flaky in these games. Like in Fallout 3, with the Ghouls & Tenpenny Tower situation. Convince the tower to let the Ghouls live there, the Ghouls abandon their old subway tunnel lair, and leave all the junk behind.... but it's still all marked as "owned", so that you can't just take it. Ditto for The Family.
Spoiler
Wipe them out to end their threat to the nearby village, but all their stuff (in a subway lair filled that was owned by cannibals/vampires) is still owned. Exactly who is reporting the thefts, and why would any of the local "authorities" (villages happy to be safe, Brotherhood happy to have crazies dead) care you're taking their stuff?

Kiralyn2000, can you please tell me how you did the spoiler buttons?

BTW, I went back to the cabin and cleaned it out then I cleaned out the campsite too. Sven said I shouldn't be in here when I tried to speak to him inside the cabin. Weird.

I save all the time. And I try and point the screen at what I'm trying to save so as I go back and can find a place I've been, then look around, find a landmark, then reload my current game, and go find my landmark.
Works like a charm. :)

Not sure if there's an automated way. I just type out the spoiler tags by hand. Like so:
[spoiler.] [/spoiler.] (remove the periods to make it work.)

Awesome! Now I can mention the cottage that I'm discussing.
It is
Spoiler
Drelas' Cottage, located west of Hamvir's Rest or south of Morthal, in the gorge between the mountains.

I also learned that you can use a script to make the house your house. I didn't know if this would cause any bugs in the game. If anyone's done it, then please let me know.

And thanks for the info!
