Questions Concerning Smithing

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 8:59 am

When you are forging and upgrading equipment...

1. Is the base value of the equipment you decide to create dependant on your level of smithing, or is it the same before an upgrade?

2. Upgraded values are based on your level of smithing right? So what is the best way to legitly go about making your gear stronger?

(No rude comments please, just straight answers. Spelling and punctuation is appreciated.)

1. Smithing doesn't affect the quality of the items made at the forge. So long as your smithing was high enough to get the perk to allow you to make the item it was high enough.
2. Get your smithing to 100, find/buy/make 4 enchanted smithing items and wear them (Notched Pickaxe also gives a bonus, as does Ancient Knowledge perk unless you use the Unofficial Patch),find/buy/make a fortify smithing potion and drink it, make your item.

Sounds reliable, thank you for the straight answer.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was half expecting something about grinding smithing and the 1.5 patch.

It might also be handy for you to know that the experience you get in smithing is now based on the value of the item you're creating. Basically, it is still possible to grind, but not with Iron Daggers... not that I condone grinding because I don't.

I grinded and personally don't find anything wrong with it. You're paying for materials or scavenging them, put it to use.

Jewelry is now more preferable to level up smithing quickly. Mine iron, buy iron, transmute it and forge jewelry (enchant and sell).

I don't know too much about the recent update, I only joined the forums today. I don't know much about Skyrim on release in comparison to now so I'll keep that in mind.

If you don't condone grinding, then you don't condone raising the smithing skill by any means other than paid training and skill books. Smithing is a grind. That's how it was designed. You need to forge lots of things to become a master blacksmith, a lot more than you'll ever use yourself.

I can't even begin to tell you how wrong you are. One of my characters is a blacksmith and with him I only smith a certain amount per game day, and even then not every day. I sell in bulk when I reach a certain amount of units or I sell in full sets. Am I grinding? No, because I'm still a long way from getting to 100

I've got smithing to 100 just by making things for myself and followers. Kitting 5 housecarls out in the best available, upgrading it when I can, upgrading all the shiny unique weapons that I collect etc, it adds up to a lot of experience.

Well, some people separate "grinding" (yeah, you need to make a bunch of stuff; do a batch whenever you get the materials to together) from "grinding" (Buy mats from vendor. Make items. Sell to vendor. Wait 24 hours for vendor to restock. Repeat over and over and over and....)

This.

I forgot to mention that my blacksmith doesn't buy his materials. He only uses materials he mines or hunts himself.

Yeah, I gathered as much already from some of the replies I got. "No, I didn't grind to level up smithing! I only made a bunch of stuff and sold it." Yeah, OK . . .

What perk tree is Ancient Knowledge in? One of the spell casting ones?

How does it affect smithing?

Serious question; what do you consider grinding? And don't just say "smithing"

Its a special one from a quest.
Adds to your AR whilst wearing heavy armour and fortifies smithing.

I dont like grinding anymore since I started playing Master diff, you can 10 levels real quick, and the enemies get that much stronger, but you put all your levels into smithing...

No kidding. It's not like iron ore and leather are rare items or worth a lot of gold. Might as well make daggers.
