Pay more attention to the dialog, he tells you about the symbols and either tells you about or gives you a book that describes them.

It's OK, I tend to rush through the NPC pvssyr myself and miss stuff like this.

wow. I've learned something new... Thanks

I'll be watching out for the symbols now.

Its amazing how much little detail Skyrim has in it. I cannot think of many games in it's field that come close to it.
Yet I still see some many people on this forum constantly trying to find fault. They are like a dripping tap.

The bugs are the only fault I find with the game which I can see the team trying to correct with the patches. Everything else put into the game was progress.

Yeah, there is so much dialogue/books in the game that you sometimes miss the tasty clues.
Then again, some things can be funny to experience later on to:)

I think it all comes down to how you focus when you play the game. Do you want to complain and only focus on the bad parts
or do you want to focus on the best bits, the bits that makes you enjoy the game. Just as in real life:)

It is one thing I miss about Text based dialog, I can re-read the tasty bits and skim the other stuff.
