Throwing out a weapon idea I had

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:32 pm

So I was starting up a new game of Skyrim, and while making my character I thought "Man, one of these days I need a make a really brutal character. With a really brutal weapon." But although there is a plentiful bounty of weapons in the game they always fall under: sword, axe, mace, bigger sword, etc.

I guess you could say I found a good idea for something new.

The Katar (or Katara, I'm not sure) is an old Indian weapon designed for thrusting and slashing with a unique grip design where the user's arm runs parallel with the blade, this allows the user to put all of their weight into an attack. If you Google it you can see there are several variants and models both fan created and forged for use in battle. Some katars are small, and are used in punching or hand-to-hand combat; a new twist on unarmed play in Skyrim perhaps? Some are long to thrust and slash at foes, and can block or parry sword swings.

You might be thinking "Well why not post this in the modding section? Or look up mods that might have something like this." I have an excuse for that actually. See I play Skyrim on my Xbox and don't get to see the light of mod-support, but it would be really cool to eventually see some DLC with this kind of weapon to find. Since it's of Indian origin, perhaps something to do with the Alik'r? They already have Scimitars and I've always seen them with Indian/Middle Eastern origins.

Anyone like it?

Are you sure your not talking about the Katana?
If so, there are already a few Katana's in game.
Spoiler
The Dragonsbane and the Ebony Blade for instance

If you are actualy talking about the Katara,
I don't realy see how this would be any different from a dagger.

The game could definitely use some unarmed weapons. And maybe some perks to improve them. As in an unarmed skill.

You can just use you're gauntlets, for which there is a skill in the Heavy Armour skill tree that (I think) takes the base/current defense value of your gauntlets and adds it to your unarmed attack value.

Edit: As for the katar I don't think it's thematically appropriate for TES. There's no India anolague in TES for one.

Um, I think you missed the point entirely.

Well what else could you include that would fit in the setting?

You could certainly add various brass knuckles, punch daggers, etc.

The point, though, is that if you had weapons for use with unarmed (or maybe better called hand-to-hand), you can cover them with a skill, just like other weapon types. And with that skill comes perks. The increased damage from the skill, perks and from smithing, makes hand-to-hand more viable. The fact that you also no longer have to rely on heavy gauntlets would mean you wouldn't have to level Heavy Armor for the perk and that you could wear whatever kind of armor you want. Or no armor at all.

In truth, I figured longer versions of Katars would be put in the one-handed slot (the large ones are the most important to me). The smaller "Fist" versions would be tricky to categorize, such difficulty might render them impossible to create.

I'll call back to the reason I want this: THEY LOOK TOTALLY SWEET (Sorry I can't post links or images)

When I remembered these bad boys existed, I thought long and hard if it would work within the fiction and lore of TES.

So once again, Katars are of ancient Indian origin. The Alik'r take inspiration from Indian or Middle-Eastern warriors as they already use Scimitars. It wouldn't even be that big of a deal, just have some Alik'r or Redguard in the world (or some storyline involved with the necessary DLC) carrying them.

They wouldn't really fit anywhere in tamriel. The only people that could possibly get away with using them would be the Alik'r. Though even then they're more closely related to the african/Middle-easterns systems, not Indians... I think It would just be kinda "off" for me to see Katars in a TES game.
