Best Race and Class for doing any Quest and still RP'ing?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:51 pm

Hey,

after I have "finished" Skyrim with my two hander nord barbarian I wished I could experience Skrim for the first time again but now with a more appropriate build and or race. Most quest lines where fun and all, but it still was odd having my brute in the college or trying to sneak and being a thief, all while being the dragon born and joining forces with one civil war party.

So this made me think what is A. best race and B. best build for participating in nearly any quest line but still mantain a believable minimal RP approach.

The question is not about creating a min/max char. It's about creating a char that nearly nowhere would feel out of place.

I came up with imperials for race. They have this moral ambiguity making it very likely they can be dragon born actually for rescuing the world (and have more powa of course), worshipping daedra cause they want the awesome weapons, being just a mercenary in civil war and assasin, having leisure day in town and are generally adventerous in order to get rich and famous. The dragon born not being a nord can easly explained by being a imperial does not essencially mean you have no nord ancestories, its more how and where you have been raised. And dragon borns have a loooong history in cyrodiil for that matter. Imperial also don't dismiss magic, making it very natural joining the college.

Best build would be some kind of hybrid 1h melee with light armor. Main magic line should be destruction or illusion.

I never play a jack-of-all-trades sort of character anymore, although when I first started TES: IV, my first main character was this sort. The way I game nowadays, that '2-handed nord barbarian' would not even be interested in sneaking around or joining the Mage's college. It just wouldn't make any sense to me.

I don't know what I would do. Are you trying to do all the questlines over again with one character? Personally, I wouldn't do it this way. Doesn't matter what kind of character or six or race we're talkin' about, eventually I wouldn't find my game "believable", anymore. That's just me, though. I like multiple characters, so go some directions, others go other directions.

You might be better off just thinking about the character story. In theory, any race could choose to do anything and could switch class based on life experience. You might be best thinking of a story of a heartless thief/assassin who becomes redeemed and turns their back on that or a fall from grace whereby they start out as a noble warrior, become corrupt and head out on a path to nefarious thieving and necromancy or something. The questlines weren't written written to facilitate roleplaying, more's the pity, and the game expects you to be every class, so in order to do all major questlines you'll have to creative. But I think creating your own personal character story that makes sense to you is better than preoccupying yourself too much with race. You can pick a race you fancy playing and decide why they follow the path the do.

Thx for the answer.

That's part of the problem: I feel too spoiled now starting over again - be it a jack of all trades char or a more specific class approach. So I had this mind game how to build a char to make the most out of Skyrim in your first play through.

I see. My first real playthrough of Oblivion was with a jack-of-all-trades. Renee Gade I was taking EVERY quest thrown her way, and going all these different directions. At the time, I was new to TES, and not truely roleplaying, so this didn't bother me. After about a month or 2 of gameplay, though, i did start to notice all the inconsistencies, and I actually put TES: IV aside for 3 months until I truely learned what roleplaying actually is, and how I could make it happen in TES.

I'm probably the wrong person to answer this thread, actually. :) Besides the main College questlines, I haven't even "finished" any of Skyrim's bigger quests. I hadn't really even intended to finish the College stuff...it just was over so fast. Before I knew it, my character at the time (a Cleric-type) was head of the College, and that was not my intention with her at all.

I tend to prefer my character's story over the in-game ones. If an in-game story happens to fit what my character is wanting to do, I'll go that direction with him/her, otherwise, a lot of in-game stuff happens to get ignored.

btw, I like your name: Cohen the Barbarian. That gave me a LoL.

The npcs are most friendly to a fellow Nord. Despite the general bias, there are Nord mages.

Instead of being a two-handed character, try someone who uses a mix of one-handed and archery, or a spellsword with sticky fingers.

a spellsword with sticky fingers.

This. One Handed ensures you're not a big brute, but can cover all your fighting skills, some spells (in this combination possibly restoration and illusion are not bad options) make you good for going under a mage section, and using light armor on top of that outfits you nicely for all your sneaking needs. If you feel like dividing your offensive skills archery is also a good advice. If you're into RPing speech and enchanting will cover you up for everything else you need. If not so much you might want to leave speech out, depending on your playing style.

Playing everything might be fun, however you waste perk points and RPing is very hard to do.

Dunmer nightblade.
This. Sort of.
I like the Nightblade for a jack-of-all builds. Destruction, Illusion, Blade, Sneak, Poison and Archery all suit the Dunmer.
This opens up quests like TG, DB, Mages Guild, Daedric Quests.

However, Skyrim is very hard to RP with only one character as it is a human land. Civil War and the Main Quest should really still be done with a human build.
ie. Helping the Stormcloaks doesnt fit a Dunmer and it seems silly to have a Dragonborn dunmer.

Listen to the sisters :

"High elf and a mage to boot, the worst kind of arrogance."

"Typical Altmer. Thinks the whole world is made for his convenience. If I had my way, we'd go down there and burn him out. Let him find some other place for his little "experiments.""

With that attitude, you can do no wrong; in your own mind, anyway. It's all there for your convenience. Join the companions? Why? They might be useful, the price for putting up with their peasant ignorance. Just make sure you get an Elven sword, got to have some pride.

For Skyrim it is a Nord,
For Oblivion it was an Imperial
For Morrowind it was a Dunmer

The games are always built around the default character which is from the race of that province.
