In Oblivion, we had:
Damage Attribute
Damage Fatigue (Stamina)
Damage Health
Damage Magicka
Disentegrate Armor
Disentegrate Weapon
Drain Attribute
Drain Fatigue (Stamina)
Drain Health
Drain Magicka
Fire Damage
Frost Damage
Shock Damage
Stunted Magicka
Weakness to Fire
Weakness to Frost
Weakness to Shock
Weakness to Poison
Those were the magical effects useable by the player, I didn't list anything unusable.
1: Damage/Absorb Attributes would be pointless because there are no Attributes anymore.
2: They baked Damage Health into Fire, Damage Fatigue into Frost, and Damage Magicka into Shock. Not sure why they got rid of the Drain variations though.
3: The lack of weaknesses in this game is really lame, the fact that Alchemy can get it still but Magic can't is just wrong. You're telling me Mages have to use weapons/alchemy now to apply that? We should be able to apply the effect with magic, Alchemy is supposed to take (some of) it's effects from magic. Huge oversight by Bethesda, or they just didn't care. I don't know why they removed them.
4: Disentegrate Weapon/Armor would have been cool, perhaps alter them in some way.
We need new effects, Skyrim should have brought something new to the table. I'm not so sure about a new element for damage entirely, but we needed something new. Unfortunately, they didn't even give us some of the old stuff. They just streamlined everything, it's kind of sad.
Oh, and this is just for Destruction. The other schools had alot of effects entirely gutted from them as well, but that list would go on forever.
