Starting to get laggy on Xbox

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 9:33 am

I have around 120 hours in and 435 saved games. About every 5 minutes it will go through a somewhat laggy period for a few seconds before it clears up. It does this the whole time I'm playing. The game is installed to the HDD. My save games are starting to get pretty big. ( into the 10 mb range ). Anything I can do to fix this? Thanks

Do you have 10,000 items stored in chests? I went through everything, and gave anything that wasn't unique to merchants just to clear some bloat. I also started doing the really annoying and tedious task of collecting the weapons of every fallen bandit, and loading them onto a corpse, otherwise the ones on the ground are persistent when the area respawns. When the new patch leaves Beta, the nirnroot glow fix should help a bit too.

It's your saves take it down to 100ish then take Skyrim out of the disk tray, put it back in and play again with no lag. I had exactly the same problem.

No it's nothing like the lag on PS3. Just a few hiccups here and there before turning annoying. No I dont have thousands of items in chests really. I'm aware that there are glitches that will sometimes make you have thousands of duplicate items. I guess I'm gonna try to clear some of them out anyways.

How about useless items that I have on me that I cant sell? Like notes and keys? Should I store them in a chest or drop them or what?

Keep the keys, you never know. Check the Dwemer museum key, it has a duplication glitch. And don't drop useless items, put them on a corpse or in a respawning chest, so they get cleared out after a while.

[Also, do you have limited space on the HD? IIRC there were a few issues with HDD's that were nearly full, not entirely sure though.]

I have over 200 gigs free on my HDD. The only thing I see that I have a lot of are potions. I have 360 of them. No duplicate keys.

Any item that can't be sold or stored shouldn't be taking up space in your inventory, as quest items are weightless (even if it has a weight value attached to it):
Spoiler
like the Elder Scroll.

but you could try restarting your system, as that seems to clear up the cache (and deleting a few saves lol).

Ok so I deleted a couple hundred saved games and got rid of probably a couple hundred food items. The game is definitely running better. Before, most of the time when I would hit save or bring up the map there would be about a 1/2 second delay most of the time before the action would occur. Now I've emptied tons of random stuff out of some of my chests in my home. So where can I find a respawning chest to dispose of some of it? Can I use that invisible chest up in Dawnstar?

Most chests, containers, corpses, etc. will respawn after awhile. You could use the Dawnstar chest, but it's not necessary. Sell unneeded items to vendors or store them in the countless chests scattered around Skyrim as you come across them. I would also advise that you pick up every single weapon fallen enemies have and store them either in their corpse or a nearby chest/container. It's quite tedious, but it should help prevent your save file from getting bloated because once your save gets to about 20mb, you will experience a lot of lag.

That many save games is insane. Here are some things that helped me. After I started doing these things my Xbox ran with no lag and no crashes.

1- I never kept more than 5 at a time.
2- Cleared my cache, after 5 or more continuous gaming hrs.
3- Have an extra fan or two blowing on the console.
4- Place the console in an upright position on the floor.

If you have extra stuff to get rid of, you can just give it away to merchants for free. They will resppawn in a few days unlike the 30 days it usually takes for containers. Thus removing it from the game quicker.

yep, made a thread about it, im on PS3 and i experienced extreme smoothness in the game, things weren't stuttering as i turned around quickly and the guards walking past me walked so realistically smooth.

i was thinking "has someone slipped a happy pill in my drink!? O_o"

I experienced this on one of my earliest characters. I've abandoned her gameplay because it lagged really heavily. I'm on PS3, but things I've been doing since ought to help you as well.
Picking every nirnroot you see prevents the 'atomic nirnroot glitch', although this is being corrected in the upcoming patch. Don't just drop items, sell them or dump them on a corpse. There should be more, but I can't seem to remember them
Alternatively, you could just start a new character like I did. Perhaps not ideal, but it can be just what you need anyway!

Why would you need 435 saved games? Thats a bit over the top.

I'm probably in a similar boat in Oblivion - every time I save, I create a new one save file. In Skyrim, however, I don't have this habit. Odd ...

I experienced the lag when I was doing the Final Quest in the Thieves Guild missions. Combat was hard because each time I made an attack it would regester every 2 seconds because the glitch/bug. It was only when i passed a certain doorway that the glitch stopped and I know this because I died and had to respawn a few places back to were the glitch was and I was glitching all over again until I passed that certain doorway again.

I believe that the game only glitchs if you do something to make it glitch. Example i took money from the Dawnstar invisible chest glitch twice and noticed the game got abit laggy so I reloaded. I personally think dont glitch the game with these chest or glitching out of citys because I think it might just screw up your game.

Are weapons from fallen enemies not separate anymore? I can't just loot them. I have to click on the enemy and loot the weapon that way. I can't just take a sword for example anymore that's on the ground. I have to take it from an enemies loot menu.
